Dear Friend,
Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!
Fighting the Fentanyl Epidemic
Watch Alan Shao’s testimony to learn more about the fentanyl crisis in South Carolina.
Monday was National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day. Too many families across South Carolina – including that of my dear friend Alan Shao from Charleston – have lost a loved one to fentanyl. It’s past time we curb the flow of deadly fentanyl into our communities.
In order to end the fentanyl epidemic, we must target this poison at its source—the Chinese suppliers and Mexican cartels trafficking drugs across our border. I’m fighting to do just that with my FEND Off Fentanyl Act. This legislation is the tool our country needs to save lives and protect our communities.
Working to Secure the Border
Last weekend, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released data showing over 183,000 illegal border crossings in July, an increase of nearly 30% from June. President Biden’s refusal to secure our border is a failure of leadership that has emboldened Mexican drug traffickers, increased human trafficking at the border, and allowed fentanyl to kill thousands of young Americans. I’ll never stop fighting to pass my Securing our Border Act and end the crisis at our border.
Intern With My Office
I am now accepting applications for internships in my North Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville offices for the fall of 2023. Every year, young people from South Carolina have the opportunity to get involved in their government by interning in one of my state offices. The internship program offers undergraduate and graduate students the chance to work with public service professionals and gain practical experience in constituent services, government policy, and more. Students of all majors, particularly those studying governmental affairs, public policy, or communications, are welcome to apply.

Spilling the #SCSweetTea on Palmetto State Leaders
At Dorman High School, Football Equipment Manager Andrew Gregory has battled cerebral palsy all his life. Instead of giving in to despair, Andrew emerged stronger having faced adversity with courage. Andrew has inspired his team as a manager, even while undergoing medical treatment. His goal to manage the Clemson team and get his college degree shows he’s not letting anything stop him from making his dreams come true. I’m proud of this young man for showing South Carolina what perseverance and true courage looks like.
