Hi John,
Today, I want to take you back to a time when art was simple and carefree.
Remember scribbling?
When we were kids, it didn't matter what we were making.
We messed about, doodled, explored freely, and created art chaos.
And this was okay.
As we get older, we might still create like this, or we may feel like unstructured art is an unproductive waste of time.
Perhaps we've become self-conscious about the "right" way to create, worrying about the outcomes more than the process itself.
Well, if that's the case, let’s change that today!
Scribbles serve a valuable purpose.
They help loosen us up, kickstart creativity, and encourage a playful mindset can be lost in our structured world.
Today’s Exercise: Fill the Page with Scribbles
Here’s what you’ll do:
- Choose Your Materials: I’m using three colored pencils, but feel free to use whatever you have—markers, crayons, or pen.
- Start Scribbling: Fill an entire page with scribbles. Don’t think too much about it; just let your hand move freely. Enjoy the motion and the marks you create, regardless of how they look.
- Add More Layers: Once you’re done, look at your scribbles. Start adding more layers on top if you feel like it. This could be more scribbles in different colors, painted shapes, paper bits added with glue. Withhold judgment and have fun.
This isn't about making a masterpiece but reconnecting with the joy of freely making art.
If you try this, share your creations with me on Instagram or email me back! I’d love to see how your scribbles turned out and what you discovered in the process.
Keep scribbling—new ideas are coming!
