Film & Documentary March 23, 2020 Letter from the editor: The COVID-19 pandemic has left the arts world reeling, and cinema is no exception. In a move without precedent in living memory, theaters around the country have closed. For many, the communal element is crucial to the moviegoing experience. That we’ve been cut off from it is just one of the many ways in which the need for social distancing is imposing abrupt, unpleasant loneliness on millions. It’s not the same thing to watch a movie at home, but we all have to make do as best we can.
To that end, we’ve been going deeper than ever into what’s available to stream - what our staff has been watching, a classic anime film, documentaries about Clyfford Still and nature, and more. This week I can’t say I’ll see you in the theater; instead, I’ll just wish you well, and hope you stay safe. While we all self-isolate at home, we thought we’d share what movies, shows, and other things we’ve been watching to keep ourselves entertained. For those who want to go down the rabbit hole of this genre, here are some topical movies to stream while quarantined. Dan Schindel The 1958 nature documentary White Wilderness is one of several films the House of Mouse is less than proud of. Nathan Smith The documentary Lifeline recounts Still’s life, career, and legacy — and how they were shaped by his cantankerous temperament. Naomi Polonsky Hyperallergic has an exclusive clip from the upcoming DVD release of the dazzling documentary Cunningham. Dan Schindel Recently restored and back in theaters, the 2003 anime film Tokyo Godfathers looks tenderly at street dwellers, who are often ignored in art and the media. Serena Scateni |
