Taking a long look at new QB Jayden Daniels, losing a legend and basketball news galore

Good morning, everyone.

Even though we're between Southeastern Conference basketball tournaments with the women completing their five-day run Sunday and the men getting started on Wednesday, there's some football news in the air.

Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels, a three-year starter, announced Saturday his transfer to LSU, where he will challenge Myles Brennan and Garrett Nussmeier for the starting job in spring practice later this month.

It's an interesting move, to be sure, and beat writer Wilson Alexander turned on the DVR to give us some insight into Daniels' move and what he brings to the table for coach Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock.

While Daniels' transfer was exciting news for the football staff, there was some bad news over the weekend for longtime observers of the program.

Former LSU All-American Roy "Moonie" Winston, a Baton Rouge native who played for the powerhouse Istrouma High football teams of the 1950s, died Saturday.

Winston, who went on to play in four Super Bowls during a 15-year career with the Minnesota Vikings, was a two-sport star at LSU as he also with the Tigers' baseball team.

Meanwhile, LSU and former offensive line coach James Cregg were back in court Monday for a breach of contract suit he has brought against the school.

The school claims Cregg was fired last spring after he admitted violating NCAA rules, but one of his attorneys argued before state District Judge Wilson Fields that the NCAA has never determined that Cregg broke any NCAA rules.

But we're just getting started here.

The LSU women's basketball team that dropped its quarterfinal game in the SEC tournament on Friday night, dropped three spots to No. 9 in the AP poll.

The news wasn't all bad, however, as senior Khayla Pointer was named one of five finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award.

There's men's basketball news as well as beat writer Sheldon Mickles moved up his weekly look at LSU's NCAA tournament projections three days and found the Tigers rising to a 5 seed by a highly-regarded bracketologist.

Also, the LSU baseball team dropped a bit in the polls after a 1-2 showing in the Shriners Classic in Houston, but beat writer Leah Vann tells us what to know and how we can watch the next game on Tuesday night vs. McNeese State.

And former LSU track and field star Mondo Duplantis broke his own world indoor pole-vault record on Monday in Serbia, while the Tigers' men's golf team came out of the gates strong to take the lead after the first two rounds of the San Diego Classic.

FINALLY: HERE’S A GREAT DEAL
