The Work You’re Doing Right Now Still Matters to God There’s something uniquely hard about doing work that feels… unnoticed. Whether it’s a role you’ve outgrown, a job that feels beneath your skill level, or a long stretch of unemployment—it’s easy to wonder: Does any of this actually matter? But in the quiet and ordinary, God is often doing His most intentional work. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord...” — Colossians 3:23 It doesn’t say, “Only if it’s your dream job.” It says whatever you do. God isn’t waiting for you to land the perfect position before He starts using you. He’s paying attention to how you carry yourself now. 1. Your Current Season Still Holds Weight In Scripture, we read about a man named Bezalel—a craftsman, not a prophet or priest. God filled him with skill, wisdom, and ability to build the tabernacle (Exodus 31). His work wasn’t upfront, but it was holy. Sometimes, we assume the only work that matters is the kind done on a stage or with a title. But God values quiet excellence. Whether you're stacking shelves, managing spreadsheets, or sending out resumes, what matters is the spirit in which you do it. God is in the details. He sees your effort. And He calls it worship. Reflection: Think about a task you’ve brushed off as “unimportant.” This week, approach it intentionally—as if God Himself will see it (because He does). 2. Staying Ready Matters as Much as Feeling Ready We often think, “Once I land the right job, I’ll really give it my all.” But calling rarely works that way. Scripture tells us the wise keep their lamps filled, even when they don’t know when the door will open (Matthew 25:1–13). Staying ready is a discipline. It means stewarding what you have, sharpening your skills, keeping your heart soft, and your ears open—so when the right opportunity comes, you're not scrambling, you're prepared. Waiting seasons aren’t passive—they're preparatory. Reflection: What’s one professional or personal area you’ve let slip “until the right job comes”? Choose one small thing to brush up on this week—a skill, a habit, a mindset. 3. Your Workplace is Still a Kingdom Assignment You don’t need a ministry title to do ministry. In Paul’s final greetings to the Romans, he mentions believers who were “hard at work in the Lord”—ordinary people, not preachers, using their everyday lives to build up the Church (Romans 16). Your workplace might be where someone sees Christ for the first time. Or where integrity cuts through compromise. Or where kindness breaks cynicism. Even in tough workplaces, you carry the presence of God. Your diligence, peace, and attitude speak louder than you know. Reflection: Ask yourself: What kind of spiritual atmosphere do I bring into my work (or job search)? How can I be more intentional with my witness this week? 4. God Still Leads in the Seemingly Unremarkable In Acts 8, Philip is pulled away from a growing revival to meet one man on a desert road. To most, it would’ve seemed like a downgrade. But God had His eyes on that man, and Philip’s obedience changed a nation. Don’t discount the significance of a season just because it’s quiet. Sometimes, the most important chapters of your calling happen when no one else is watching. God doesn’t waste time. He invests it. Reflection: Write down one thing God may be cultivating in your character during this season (e.g., patience, discipline, deeper trust). Thank Him for that hidden work. Final Thoughts It’s tempting to believe your work doesn’t count unless it looks a certain way. But God’s Kingdom isn’t built by visibility—it’s built by faithfulness. Where you are right now matters. Your work matters. Your attitude matters. So do it with intention. Do it with joy. And when you're ready for a job that aligns with your faith and purpose, visit ChristianJobs.com.au. You'll find roles that value who you are and who you're becoming. |
