View in browser SEPTEMBER 10, 2019 President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had fired national security adviser John Bolton after a string of disagreements, removing one of the most hawkish voices in Trump's inner circle on a number of issues, including Taliban negotiations and China trade talks.
Bolton himself said in a tweet that he had offered to resign Monday night, and that the president had said in response that they would "talk about it tomorrow." On Hardball Tuesday, Chris Matthews said that John Bolton's role "was a marriage made in hell between a war hawk who pushed war in Iraq and lusted for one in Iran, and an erratic president who promised no more stupid wars."
On All In with Chris Hayes, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) said that “We should be upset that John Bolton was ever in that position. We should also be upset that the president is moving people through these jobs so quickly."
Republican Dan Bishop narrowly defeated Democrat Dan McCready in the special election in North Carolina's 9th Congressional District. During his victory speech, Bishop praised President Trump and attempted to give him a call.
The race was being closely watched for possible signs of weakness among Republican voters that could spell bad news nationally in 2020 for President Trump. The president endorsed Bishop and campaigned for him on Monday.
A special election was called in the district after last year’s results weren't certified due to allegations of fraud.
Ahead of the results, Steve Kornacki provided some analysis: The White House, obviously, will be satisfied with any kind of victory for Bishop, even if it's a close one. In addition, in the wake of the ballot fraud drama and after years of local Republican infighting, Trump and his allies will have some mitigating factors to point to if their candidate's performance is shaky.
