Gearing up for Memorial Day weekend |
Memorial Day, which falls on Monday, May 26, is a time to honor members of the U.S. Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives while in the military. Many people also consider the long holiday weekend as the unofficial start of summer. If you are making plans to recognize the holiday, get ready for a cool and slightly rainy weekend. Temperatures warm up about five degrees each day, eventually getting us into the low-70s for most of us on Memorial Day. Friday will have scattered showers and Saturday is expected to be mostly dry. Speaking of summer being right around the corner, Meijer is slashing prices on seasonal staples like popsicles, lemonade, burger buns, baked beans and more, just in time for your next cookout. |

Five years after Edenville, Michigan dams remain a ‘ticking time bomb’ |
Five years ago, Michigan learned a hard lesson about the dangers posed by its fleet of deteriorating dams when days of heavy rain swelled the impounded rivers above the poorly-maintained, century-old Edenville Dam. The soggy structure collapsed on May 19, 2020. A torrent of floodwater from the Tittabawassee and Tobacco rivers ripped homes off foundations and washed out bridges; overwhelming a second dam, flooding downtown Midland and sending 10,000 people into evacuation during a pandemic. Still needs work: Dam experts and advocates examining the state’s outdated rules and safeguards in the aftermath say Michigan has not done enough to change regulations and invest in the aging infrastructure. The crisis brought only half-measures and some funding before fading into the rearview, they say. Before and after: The term “Sanford Strong” rings truer than ever before in 2025. The community pulled together when the massive flood in 2020 inundated the town, leaving feet of water in most homes. Check out the differences of the same areas in Sanford during the flood in May 2020 and now in May 2025 with this video. |

National retailer with more than 2,300 stores says it won’t raise prices over Trump tariffs |
No price increase: While some retailers say they have no choice but to raise prices due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, national home improvement retailer Home Depot says it won’t be one of them. The company says it’s able to keep prices steady because of how it sources its imports. Home Depot has diversified where its imports are coming from, including reducing how much it brings in from China. Possible consequences to come: If House Republicans have their way, Michigan’s secretary of state will face more than a warning for a campus finance law violation. House Speaker Matt Hall Michael Kransz reports.. That came after Benson was let off with a warning for violating Michigan’s campaign finance law. Three-year war: Bridget Brink, an East Grand Rapids native and the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, recently resigned over policy disagreements because of President Trump’s stance on the Ukraine-Russian war. |

Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis: What men should know about screening |
Prostate cancer screening: Health professionals are using former President Joe Biden’s recent cancer diagnosis as an opportunity to raise awareness of the need for screening and early detection. Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office announced Sunday, May 18. The cancer has also metastasized, spreading to his bones, which further complicates treatment. What to know: Annual screening is recommended for men age 40 with a family history of prostate cancer in two or more close relatives, and age 45 for those with one such close relative. Black men should also start at 45. Otherwise, health officials recommend annual testing beginning at age 50. More in health news: Annual COVID-19 shots for healthy younger adults and children will no longer be routinely approved under a major new policy shift unveiled Tuesday by the Trump administration. |

Detroit Lions set 2025 preseason schedule, kicking off with Hall of Fame game |
Lions preseason schedule: The Detroit Lions will kick off the NFL preseason in the Hall of Fame Game against Jim Harbaugh's Los Angeles Chargers on July 31 in Canton, Ohio. This marks Detroit's first appearance in the game since 1991, reports Jacob Richman. The Lions will then face the Falcons on the road before hosting the Dolphins and Texans to complete their preseason slate. Tigers news: Veteran catcher Tomás Nido was designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. The move was the expected corresponding transaction for the return of catcher Jake Rogers, who was reinstated from the injured list and will start Tuesday’s game in St. Louis. Nido will now either be traded or placed on outright waivers, Evan Woodbery reports. Making the team: Despite Michigan returning three standout freshman guards, four-star recruit McKenzie Mathurin isn't intimidated by the competition. The Oklahoma native, ranked 39th nationally by ESPN, Andrew Kahn reports she's "excited about being able to fit in with them and learn from them." Currently training with England's national team, Mathurin averaged 22.7 points per game in high school and is expected to add valuable depth to Michigan's talented young backcourt. |

Lake views open up at Northern Michigan campground after 800 trees removed from ice storm |
Clear view: Campers headed up north to Clear Lake State Park will certainly see a difference in the campground after massive ice storm damage has cleared tree canopies. The state park is known for its pristine inland lake and namesake, Clear Lake, which is encircled with trees. As part of storm clean up, more than 800 trees were removed from the campground, park supervisor Mike Sutton said. Take a look: The spectacular view of Lake Michigan from the iconic Sable Points Lighthouse is now crystal clear. Last week, new windows were installed in the lantern room at the top of the lighthouse tower at Ludington State Park, Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association announced. The plexiglass had become clouded, blurring the view of Lake Michigan. From up above: Stepping up 98 stairs, visitors of the Au Sable Light Station get a panoramic view of Lake Superior and the Grand Sable Dunes. Those views, and the educational tour, are free throughout the summer as Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore staff guide free, daily 30-minute climbs. The free guided climbs begin June 8 and run through Sept. 30. |
