DON'T believe the fake 'Martin Lewis' or 'MSE' ads |
New. Top easy-access savings fight - battle of the banks The highly rated app-only Chase bank account* has had the field to itself recently. Its linked savings account has been a massive best buy for easy access - where you can put money in and withdraw it whenever you want. On top of that, its debit card is top for spending overseas, and you get 1% cashback on most spending too (again, untouchable). There's so much demand for it, in fact, that once you apply, there's now a queue to get the account processed and opened.
- Top for upfront cash: HSBC gives new switchers a FREE £170. - Top for service + cash: First Direct* gives new switchers a FREE £150 and is top rated for customer service - 90% rated it 'great' in our last poll. It also has a linked 3.5% regular saver and gives many an ongoing £250 0% overdraft. - Top for ongoing rewards: Lloyds gives a FREE £125 plus a choice of 6 cinema tickets, 12 film rentals & more. The best savings rates come from locking money away in a fix. If you've a chunk of cash you definitely won't need access to, then putting it in a fixed-rate account pays a lot more. Full info's in Top savings but in brief... - Top six-month fix: Shawbrook Bank 2% AER (min £1,000 deposit) - Top one-year fix: Ahli United Bank UK via Raisin 2.55% AER (min £1,000) - Top two-year fix: Ahli United Bank UK via Raisin 2.87% AER (min £1,000) You can fix for longer, but there's not much of a premium in doing so and with UK interest rates predicted to rise further, the longer you fix, the longer you forgo the ability to ditch and switch to a better rate. |

Stop the broadband rip off - many are overpaying by up to £350/year
We've rounded the best up below - though it's better to use our Broadband Unbundled comparison tool which tells you which deals are available to your home. One big advantage of the hot Vodafone deal this week, compared with the megafast Virgin deal that we've recently featured as a best buy, is that it's available to 96% of homes, compared with Virgin's 55%. PS: On universal credit or similar benefits? See our special discounted social broadband tariffs round-up.
At least 50% of customers must get the advertised speeds at peak times. All providers above tell you the estimated max speed you're likely to get before you sign up. Switching usually only means about two hours' downtime. You're told the switch time, and most don't need an engineer to set it up - though a few leaving Virgin may need an Openreach engineer to visit. Be warned - most firms hike prices a little during your contract. If your contract warns you, you're stuck with the rise - Plusnet, Shell Energy and Vodafone do, so you'll see an increase in spring 2023. Don't want to switch? Haggle. If you want to stay with your existing provider, use the deals in the table above as a benchmark price to help you haggle costs down. Not sure how to do it? Read our full Broadband haggling tips guide. Members of cashback sites can sometimes undercut deals. In some cases, the cashback can mean these sites undercut promos elsewhere, though sometimes the deal differs - so check carefully. More in Top cashback sites. |

THIS WEEK'S POLL Have you changed the amount you're paying into a pension because of the cost of living crisis? Soaring inflation means we now need to spend more just to pay bills and put food on the table. This week, we want to know if the cost of living crisis has impacted the amount you're able to save into your pension. Vote in this week's poll. More than four in 10 haven't used a bank branch in the last six months. Last week we asked when you last visited your bank's branch. Of the 12,000+ people who voted, 42% said it had been more than six months ago, though another 40% had visited in the last month. Perhaps unsurprisingly, people aged 65 and older were more likely to have used a branch recently. See full bank branch results. |
MONEY MORAL DILEMMA Should we leave our friend out of rounds at the pub? My mates and I regularly go to the pub for a catch-up, taking turns to buy rounds. One of our friends often 'conveniently' disappears to the toilet or goes for a smoke when it's his round. We've spoken to him about it, but nothing's changed. Should we start to leave him out of rounds - which could cause problems in the group - or ignore it, as we have been doing? FROM 'NOTHING IN 61 YEARS' TO '£10,000' - WHAT'S YOUR BIGGEST PREMIUM BOND WIN? That's all for this week, but before we go... last week NS&I increased the 'interest rate' on Premium Bonds from 1% to 1.4%, which inspired us to ask MoneySavers about their biggest wins. Most reported netting at least £25 and several had got £100 or £500 prizes. A couple of lucky winners told us of scooping £10,000. But we also heard from many who'd had bonds for 50 or 60 years and had never won a penny! What's your biggest prize - we'd love to know if any MoneySaver has ever scooped the £1 million jackpot? Tell us in our Premium Bonds winnings Facebook and Twitter posts. |
