We are dipping back into the vault and pulling out more vintage monologues from the Lake Wobegon saga.  These stories originally aired on A Prairie Home Companion in the year 1981 and they have been remastered according to modern audio specifications.  In January, the Young People's Scripture Drill team competes and takes home awards.  On June 13th, we hear the first ever telling of the famous 'Living Flag' story, recalling the most recent time Wobegonians attempted to form the American flag with their bodies, in 1936.  And in December, things are so quiet that Mrs Mueller worries she might have missed the Second Coming!  These stories will remind you why Garrison Keillor is America's favorite storyteller and showcase some of the earliest tales from the "little town that time forgot and decades could not improve."  Yes, it is time to return to Lake Wobegon and hear stories that haven't been heard in over 4 decades.

From the Archives: Garrison Keillor's The News from Lake Wobegon - 1981

When asked what made A Prairie Home Companion so special, many fans would answer that it was Garrison Keillor's ability to spin a story.  The radio show was first uplinked to the national grid in 1979, and as the show gained a larger audience, Garrison continued to fill out details of all the happenings in Lake Wobegon, his fictional hometown.  It was supposedly always "a quiet week in Lake Wobegon," but it's funny how much can happen during a year of quiet weeks .

"I think the monologue was around 8 to 10 minutes for a long time.  I never did know how to get into it, and then I came up with that first line, which solved the problem so nicely . . . You can't imagine how liberating that is; to not have to go out on stage and explain why you're going to say this." - Garrison Keillor, 1987

This collection gathers together 21 stories that originally aired in 1981 and are themed from January thru December, many of which pre-date the introduction of 'it's been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon."

"What I quickly came to appreciate was the universal truth in Garrison Keillor's rich vein of stories.  That they are set in Lake Wobegon is not incidental, neither is it absolutely necessary.  Those truths, after all, are played out in the Lake Wobegons of our own experience wherever they may occur - whether in prairie hamlets, Sun Belt suburbs, or beg-city neighborhoods." - Tom Browkaw

From Diane Nordeberg becoming Snow Queen,  Father Emil turning 70,  spring cleaning and planting season,  to the history of the volunteer Fire Department, learning the importance of the warming house, finding out how the Lake Wobegon Whippets are faring to the concluding story with the Christmas Story being re-told Lake Wobegon style.

Over 3 hours of stories that will return you to your favorite small town and it's many wonders:  The Chatterbox Cafe, Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility, The Sidetrack Tap, Wally "Old Hard Hands" Memorial Staduim, the statue of the Unknown Norwegian . . . these stories will captivate and charm you while providing a few laughs, chuckles and tears.   Yes, It's time to return to Lake Wobegon!
