Flood control plans may spark agency tug-of-war

BY VICKI FERSTEL | Staff writer

Dueling flood plans? East Baton Rouge, Ascension and Iberville officials, through the Amite River Basin Commission, are planning to spend $30 million for dredging and other projects, like realigning Ward Creek, to help speed the flow of floodwater down Bayou Manchac. Staff writer David J. Mitchell examines the issue.

LSU cracks the AP Top 10. After their 29-26 overtime win over Ole Miss on Saturday, LSU football now ranks in the top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25.

Staff writer Wilson Alexander has the details.

Smiley's lasting legacy: Leave it to staff writer Jan Risher to attempt the archeological dig through the newsroom desk of beloved columnist Smiley Anders.

Smiley, who died May 31 at age 86 and after 50 years at The Advocate, left a treasure trove of … well, we'll just call it "stuff."

Risher, who was gathering his things for his family, writes that Smiley's desk was filled with delightful — and delightfully strange — knickknacks.
