THE PRICE WE PAY: Sweeping changes to the country's flood insurance program are expected to produce phased-in premium ncreases of more than 129% for about half of Louisiana policyholders, an analysis of FEMA data shows. About 1 in 10 could see premiums jump by more than four times their current amount. The figures are subject to change, but they provide the most complete look so far of the effect on Louisiana, which has the highest participation rate of any state and accounts for a disproportionate share of claims.
GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: When Monica Bourgeois and Neil Gernon got wind that Pontchartrain Vineyards was for sale, the New Orleans couple, both deeply entrenched in the wine world, thought it sounded too good to be true. They rushed to tour the property, in the rural north shore town of Bush, and returned later for one of the winery's signature Jazz’n the Vines events, where a crowd gathered to enjoy wine and watch Charmaine Neville perform. As darkness fell that evening, someone set up candelabras - and the Gernons were sold. They bought the property, and now plan to reopen it as Wild Bush Farm + Vineyard.
