Short stories allow you to explore your character’s choices within a limited number of words. The form challenges you to set things up right away. By writing short stories, you’ll learn how to structure your fiction for the greatest payoff. You may discover that you'd like to develop your short story into a full length novel.

Learn effective strategies in WDU's Focus on the Short Story Writing Workshop. You'll start by preparing a first draft. Your skills will be put to the test as you build the beginning, middle, and end to your story. You'll learn how to revise your work and make it better. Develop two short stories in class while receiving instructor feedback.

Mark Spencer is the author of A Haunted Love Story, The Masked Demon, Images of America: Monticello, The Weary Motel, Only Missing (winner of the Faulkner Society’s Faulkner Award for Fiction), Love and Reruns in Adams County, Wedlock, and Spying on Lovers (short stories, winner of the Patrick T.T. Bradshaw Book Award).
