Now that we are temporarily closed we will continue to share online content, exhibitions, interviews, videos from Fondazione Sozzani archives over the coming weeks.
The life-work of Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase (Hokkaido, 1934 - Tokyo, 2012) one of the most radical and experimental photographers of the post-war generation in Japan, remained largely inaccessible for over two decades, following a tragic fall that left the artist with permanent brain damage. In the recent years the archives were gradually disclosed, revealing a wealth of material that had never been shown before. In January2019 the Fondazione Sozzani presented “Masahisa Fukase, Private Scenes”, the first retrospective exhibition of the Japanese photographer in Italy, curated by Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in collaboration with Tomo Kosuga, director of the Masahisa Fukase Archives. In addition to his body of work the exhibition shown a number of seminal publications dating from the early 1960s to 1992.
“We have lived together for ten years, but he has only seen me through the lens, and I believe that all the photographs of me were unquestionably photographs of himself.” Yoko Wanibe, Camera Mainichi, 1973
““Am I going to continue taking photos, trying to hold back what flees? The task I have set myself of continually taking photographs in order to hold things back is possibly a way of compensating for life and the passing moment. It is doomed to failure, but it’s also what I most enjoy doing in life.”
