5 Food and Agriculture Policy Areas to Watch in 2025

California is the largest agricultural producer in the United States: our Central Valley region alone produces a quarter of the nation’s food. The decisions made by every president and their cabinet have far-reaching consequences for our farmers, the price and the quality of our food, and climate change. 



As Trump’s second term begins, there are many questions and concerns about what his administration will mean for equitable food access, small family farms and the essential workers who feed us, and our planet. Here are some of the major food and agriculture policy issues we’ll be watching, as we know you will be, too.

Remembering Charles Phan

Chef Charles Phan sadly and unexpectedly passed away last Monday. He was a visionary force and a passionate supporter of our San Francisco restaurant and farmers market community (shown at left with Chef Traci Des Jardins at our Sunday Supper). As we all grieve his sudden passing, we want to share how much he meant to us.

Aruna Lee, owner of Saturday Ferry Plaza favorite Volcano Kimchi, made this special recipe with Asian pears and root veggies from the farmers market, kelp, and red chili powder. Enjoy on its own or as a side with your favorite meals.

After delays, Dungeness crab season is open! For a limited time, H&H Fresh Fish Co. and The Little Fish Company have wild-caught crabs among their selections of fresh, local seafood. Find them both on Saturdays at the Ferry Plaza.

Nacho and Casamira Sanchez named  Twin Girls Farm after their daughters, Christyna and Serena. Visit their stand for certified organic mandarins, blood oranges, and grapefruit on Tuesdays at the Ferry Plaza.
