Steve Bruce and the long and winding road that leads to … Blackpool

John Brewin

BRUCE ALMIGHTY

“I am very disappointed and saddened to see Steve go, having made personal attempts to make him stay. But given the divisions within Sheffield United this has not been possible” – chief suit Carlo Colombotti, May 1999.

“We have mutually agreed that it is in both [Huddersfield]’s and Steve’s best interests that this amicable agreement has been reached” – chief suit Barry Rubery, October 2000.

“He told me that he had thought about the move for over a week and it was an offer he couldn’t refuse. We didn’t even have the chance to offer him a package with Wigan” – chief suit Dave Whelan, May 2001.

“The very latest is that Steve Bruce has resigned from his position at Crystal Palace Football Club. However, I have refused to accept his resignation and he is still bound by the terms of his contract, which include a significant notice period” – chief suit Simon Jordan, November 2001.

“The company announces that Steve Bruce has been released from his contract, and has resigned from his position as manager of Birmingham City Football Club with immediate effect and the company has received in cash three million pounds in compensation” – club statement, November 2007

“I have always said I would not stand in anyone’s way who wishes to leave the club, as long as the terms are in the best interest of Wigan” – Dave Whelan, June 2009.

“Steve has acted with honesty and integrity throughout, which is testament to the character and commitment he has shown during his time at Sunderland. I would like to personally place on record my thanks to him for his significant contribution to our football club” – Ellis Short, November 2011.

“Following four incredible seasons with [Hull City] including two promotions and our first ever FA Cup final, we can confirm that manager Steve Bruce has left the club by mutual consent” – club statement, July 2016.

“[Aston Villa] would like to place on record our gratitude to Steve and his team for their hard work and commitment. We wish them well for the future” – club statement, October 2018.

“The club is disappointed to learn via a public statement issued by Newcastle United that it has appointed former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce” – club statement, July 2019.

Newcastle United would like to place on record its gratitude to Steve for his contribution and wishes him well for the future” – club statement, October 2021.

“[West Brom] would like to place on record its thanks to Steve Bruce and his coaching staff for their efforts since arriving in February” – club statement, October 2022.

“I’m confident that Steve’s experience and leadership qualities will be a tremendous asset for Blackpool Football Club. His organised approach coupled with his desire to build a hardworking and entertaining side is a large part of what attracted us to him” – owner Simon Sadler, September 2024.

QUOTES OF THE DAY

Following the global trend in shows, sporting events and entertainment, Valencia will join this practice, which has the support and technology of La Liga. Tickets will therefore go on sale at a base price, which could increase as the days go by. Buying your tickets early will ensure you get the best price” – yep, after the triumph of “dynamic” pricing in the Oasis free-for-all, the first football club to smell an opportunity to make more cash pops its head above the parapet.

With impeccable timing after the Oasis fiasco, voices in football have started to float the idea of infecting football with [this idea]. Never underestimate the potential for the most greedy owners in football to try and import terrible ideas from other industries to exploit supporter loyalty. Matchgoers are already mobilising against the recent wave of price rises and attacks on concessions. Any underhand increases will be met with enormous opposition” – the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA), which represents fans in England and Wales, is quick to respond.

FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS

quote

Well, plenty of negativity and unbecoming jibes in your report on goings on at Birmingham City (yesterday’s Football Daily). Tom Wagner uses three letters of the alphabet to respond to such predictable tosh. FEA. Stands for ‘[eff] ‘em all’. And that includes you as well now” – Paul Edgerton.

When, years ago, I got my left-leaning Big Paper subscription, it came with a huge surprise: an irony-clad football newsletter which made me laugh out loud. The kind of football coverage I never knew existed. But as a foreigner – I can see the Johan Cruyff Arena through my bedroom window – you eventually start wondering. How many years of close reading does it take to be counted among 1,056 others?” – Job van Oel.

To follow Neil Bage’s comment on Luis Suárez’s retirement (yesterday’s Football Daily letters), it’s not just Uruguay’s front line that will suffer: the defence will need a helping hand from someone else too” – Paul Brookwood.

HALF-TIME COFFEE BREAK?

How early can a footballer breakfast on pasta and chicken? That was put to the test in today’s Women’s Big Cup play-offs when Celtic faced Finland’s KuPS in Lithuania, and kicked off at the ungodly hour of 10am BST, around the time many people are considering a second coffee and waiting for Homes Under The Hammer to start. Sample quote from the BBC’s text coverage: “The final change of the morning for Celtic, Shannon McGregor replaces Amy Gallacher.” Extra time in Siauliai took the game beyond noon and a Saoirse Noonan hat-trick took Celtic through. Next question: will this kick-off time be coming to men’s Big Cup? Unlikely unless Uefa suits discover mid-morning matters bring in more loot.

MOVING THE GOALPOSTS

It’s been a while since the USA USA USA was worth copying but women’s football and the NWSL have never been stronger. In fact, Sophie Downey took a road trip to see what the WSL could learn, from fan engagement, to better merchandise and tifos. You can sign up to receive our sister email here.

NEWS, BITS AND BOBS

Leicester could face another points deduction battle this season, with the club required to submit their 2023-24 accounts to the Premier League by the end of December to establish whether they have breached PSR rules.

Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins and Phil Foden are out of Lee Carsley’s first matches as interim England manager due to various “ongoing issues” and illness-knack.

Meanwhile Republic of Ireland striker Callum Robinson reckons England’s Jack Grealish, who pulled on the green jersey at youth level, will deal with the Aviva Stadium jeers because he gets verbal pelters every time he plays. “He’ll be ready for the abuse,” chirped Robinson. “He gets booed anywhere he goes anyway, even in England.”

Aston Villa are back in Big Cup, baby, and the club’s owners plan to fleece fans accordingly. The cost of a home ticket for non-season ticket holders will range between £85 and £97. Oof!

Manchester United have signed the Norway forward Celin Bizet from Tottenham on a three-year contract. “We want young, hungry players, who can make a real difference,” cheered manager Marc Skinner.

And Birmingham City have opened their LDV Vans Trophy campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Walsall, who claimed a bonus point by winning on penalties.

STILL WANT MORE?

Turns out we’re not the only ones who think Jonathan Wilson is a footballing-brain-in-a-box. World champions Argentina recruited our reporter as an assistant (for two weeks) to analyse Nigeria and Ivory Coast and this is what happened.

MEMORY LANE

Newcastle United wheel out dancers Sharon Bannister and Julia Dos Santos from the London School of Samba to welcome Mirandinha from Brazil. We’re still not quite sure why Magpies teammate Neil McDonald was brought along for this photoshoot … you may be able to elaborate.
