A course correction, a case closed and a shoo-shoo of a storm
By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editorCOURSE CORRECTION: Mayor LaToya Cantrell began talking in 2018 about moving New Orleans City Hall operations to Municipal Auditorium, and top aides have been working the proposal ever since. But on Friday the mayor backed away, saying amid growing community opposition to the proposal that she is open to other options. CASE CLOSED: In 2013, River Birch landfill owners Fred Heebe and Jim Ward torpedoed a federal criminal investigation into their business practices by exposing a scandal inside the U.S. attorney's office. On Friday, they avoided a civil trial on the same topic by settling a racketeering lawsuit that a competitor filed against them. UNDERWHELMED: OK, so it was not the fierce, flood-inducing Tropical Storm Claudette that we expected. Oh, sure, it was windy, and wet, but the weather disturbance that moved north from the Gulf of Mexico into the New Orleans on Friday evening proved less fearsome than was earlier anticipated. You can find these stories and more in today’s Front Page and on NOLA.com. Weclome to the weekend. D.B. |
