A popular teenager active in dancing, running and try-outs for girls’ rugby, Shalmoné would occasionally complain about pain in her right leg which would come and go – until the pain progressed. A round of tests and doctors identified a tumour in her tibia. Her leg was put in a full cast as she underwent chemotherapy before surgery. Affected bone was removed, and she received a total knee replacement, followed by more chemotherapy. Shalmoné couldn’t bear the idea of losing her hair at the touch of a hand, or find it covering her pillow when she woke up in the morning. She decided to have it shaved off ahead of chemotherapy. You can Her friends treated her like an outcast, and deserted her. There’s a well-known saying: ‘Never doubt that one person can make a difference.’ And the truth of that saying was brought to life, when Shalmoné benefited from a special difference that individual CANSA supporters like you help to make possible. We supplied her with a wig. Initially, it was a temporary one, and then one made from real hair which she could curl, straighten, and blow dry into any style of her choice. Her joyful response was: ‘I feel like a girl again’. The differences you help to make by clicking here to make your donation are varied, but each one can mean the world to a cancer patient. A common example is access to prostheses, after a mastectomy leaves a woman without one or both breasts. Other differences include Broviac ports, paediatric and adult wheelchairs and mobility aids and catheters, artificial limbs after amputations, and facial prosthetics when an eye, nose or ear is lost. But in reality, our ability to budget for these very real differences relies totally on donations. So you’ll see why your generosity – and donations made online by clicking here – are so important, and just how many differences you can make. By clicking here right now to make another donation, you’ll be making a difference that can be seen. But you’ll also be making one that’s unseen. That difference is your personal compassion, something that’s unique to you, and is offered with an open heart to someone you’re unlikely to ever know. Thank you for being that one person who makes a difference. Yours sincerely, Elize Joubert CANSA is proud to be partnering with Maroela Media for our 90th Anniversary Celebrations.
