Hello hello and Happy Hijrī New Year!
The Islamic New Year occurs during the first month of the Hijrī or Muslim lunar calendar. It commemorates a significant event: the migration of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca, his birthplace in Saudi Arabia, to Medina in the summer of 622 C.E.
You can find out more about this event, and more, in our guide to Saudi Arabia.
But what you may not know, is that I used to live there, back when I was a girl. It was in Riyadh, the capital, rather than Medina but it still left me with memories of desert sands and incense.
However you feel about the occasion, we hope it's a day of peace 💙
Cheers, Abi
