Fans hopeful of seeing the Andretti name in Formula 1 in 2025 had their hopes dashed today; despite the FIA approving its application in October, the F1 organization has rejected the entry until 2028.
Why? Well, Andretti was always required to reach a commercial deal with F1’s owner Liberty Media before it would be allowed to compete. And while it was to bring General Motors to the party in name, it looks like it will only be accepted when it brings hardware in the shape of its own power unit.
Included in a very long statement on the subject, F1 said: “We would look differently on an application for the entry of a team into the 2028 Championship with a GM power unit, either as a GM works team or as a GM customer team designing all allowable components in-house.”
It’s a major blow, but surely not a death knell for the project. This was never going to be easy, and now at least the framework for it joining as the 11th team is there for all to see. Or, it could still buy Haas or Williams if they are available… By: Charles Bradley, Global Editor in Chief
