In the most recent midterm elections, Islamist-backed candidates did notably well. With a vast political infrastructure in place, a concentrated collection of Islamist groups have worked, with some success, to manipulate the Muslim vote and use it to advance their extremist agenda. However, Islamist influence over the Muslim vote is only as durable as their level of support within Muslim communities. What is the future of American Islamist efforts to influence our politics?

Benjamin Baird directs the Middle East Forum’s Islamism in Politics project. He researches Islamist activity in Washington DC and state capitals across the country, organizes to counter these efforts, and educates the public, the media, and politicians on the threat posed by Islamist involvement in politics. He is a decorated U.S. Army infantry veteran and frequent contributor to a variety of prominent national publications. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has finally appointed a special representative to combat what he calls "Islamophobia" in the person of one Amira Elghawaby, formerly of Canada’s branch of the Council of American-Islamic Relations (better known as CAIR). Elghawaby’s record has prompted immediate calls for her resignation but Trudeau stands by her. What are the implications of this appointment? Does Islam in Canada need this special protection?

Tarek S. Fatah is founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress, a columnist at the Toronto Sun, and a talk show host on Toronto's NewsTalk1010 AM Radio. He is the author of Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State (2008) and The Jew is Not My Enemy (2011). Born in Pakistan to an Indian-Muslim family, he immigrated to Canada in 1987 and has a degree in biochemistry from the University of Karachi.
