Dear Reader,

The Western evacuation of Kabul continues, with American and British officials increasingly worried about the threat of an imminent terrorist attack on the airport, and warning people to stay away. You can follow the latest on our live blog. The debacle is being compared to the fall of Saigon in 1975. The West bounced back from that humiliation, but will this time be the same? Allister Heath argues in his column that there are four key reasons to believe that, on this occasion, the Western hegemony is over.

The Telegraph broke the news this morning that the NHS has plans to start vaccinating 12-year-olds and that children would not need parental consent. Laura Donnelly has all the details. Meanwhile, with the latest update to the Government’s travel lists set to kick in, you can keep up with all the changes on our travel live blog.

House prices may have surged through the pandemic but, with the economy getting back to normal, attention is turning to which lockdown trends will continue, which will end and how that will affect homeownership. Melissa Lawford details five charts to keep an eye on that predict when the next price crash will come.

Finally, few interviews have done as much damage to a star’s image as when Meg Ryan went on Parkinson in 2003. Eighteen years on, debate over the encounter has resumed, but through the eyes of a new era. Were the British press and public too quick to judge Ryan and let Parkinson off? Anthony Brett explores what was true, what wasn’t and why perceptions have changed.
