Budget-friendly things to do in London this week for £5 or less. Looking for more free things to do in London? Here are 102 of em! We've also compiled this epic map of free stuff in London. See photos of old Soho in the French HouseThe perma-packed French House in Soho has a miniature exhibition in a corner of the bar right now. Soho Night & Day features the black and white photography of Frank Norman (think showgirls readying themselves for performances; smoky card games), accompanied by the sharp commentary of the late Jeffrey Bernard. It's a small exhibition (and not necessarily easy to take in, given the tables of punters sat in front of it) but worth knowing about if you're in the hood, and fancy a taste of the old Soho with your glass of pinot. Free (but buy a drink if you can), until February. Get yourself a coffee for £1On Monday, fast food chain Yolk is offering coffees for just £1 across all of its sites (Canary Wharf, London Bridge, New Street Square, Soho, Broadgate, Strand, London Wall, Victoria, New Oxford Street)... which would make it an excellent time to offer to do the office coffee run. The offer is to promote Yolk's new Brewclub coffee subscription service which launched last week. Additionally throughout January, look out for your Yolk coffee being served in one of 10 'golden cups' with a golden sticker on the bottom, to win a Brewclub membership. £1, 13 January. Having fun in London needn’t be pricey - especially if you sign up to these listings! Salute the sunWednesday's free Gresham College lecture sees Professor Chris Lintott, Gresham Professor of Astronomy, talking about the sun. He uses results from NASA's Parker Solar Probe and ESA's Solar Orbiter, to unravel some of the sun's mysteries, and how it affects life on earth. You can watch in person at Conway Hall (Holborn), or online. Other Gresham College lectures this week cover Net Zero in the private sector, and the paradox of screen music. Free, 15 January. Watch this Japanese foodie film for freeJapan House in Kensington holds a free screening of 1985 film Tampopo, about a widow who enlists an unlikely team in her goal to create the perfect bowl of ramen. It's shown in Japanese with English subtitles, and is part of a series of foodie film screenings coinciding with the current Looks Delicious! exhibition (also free) about Japan's food replica culture. Free, 15 January (repeated on 26 January). Find out about the bombsites of BloomsburyDr Gabe Moshenska, Associate Professor at University College London's Institute of Archaeology, gives a talk about the bombsites of Bloomsbury. Head to the London Archives to trace the points of detonation as well as memorials, marked masonry, and modern architecture which tell the story of Bloomsbury during the Blitz. £5, 15 January. Take a tour of this magnificent churchEver been to Grand Junction community centre in Paddington? It's within the building of St Mary Magdalene’s Church, designed and built in the 1860s. Free tours of the building are offered regularly, including this Saturday, when you can join a volunteer guide to learn more about the Victorian history and heritage. Free, 18 January. Go wassailingLondon Wildlife Trust hosts a free Wassail Day at Dulwich Village Orchard. Wassailing is an ancient custom of singing to apple-producing trees in cider orchards in hope of a good harvest this year, and the event includes an orchard tour, crafts and other activities. Wellies are advised, as it's likely to be extremely muddy. Free (but donations are welcome), 18 January. Visit the Hampton Court Palace gardens for freeThe first garden open days of the year at Hampton Court Palace are this weekend, meaning you can visit the gardens without paying the usual admission fee. The Great Fountain Garden, the Privy Garden and the Pond Garden are among the areas included in the offer, but note that if you want to visit the palace itself, the Maze, or the Magic Garden Playground, the normal admission fee applies. Free, 18-19 January. Play with this glowing light wallThis is the final week of the Young V&A's festive installation, Quantum Jungle. The interactive artwork by artist, engineer and designer Robin Baumgarten is made from 800 tactile springs which light up when touched, in celebration of festivals of light around the world. Free, until 19 January. Grab a free slice of comedy at a pizza restaurantEvery Sunday evening La Rosetta pizza restaurant on Stoke Newington High Street hosts a free comedy showcase from merging comics, lasting 90 minutes (6pm-7.30pm). The laughs won't cost you a thing to enjoy, but we recommend getting a pizza before, after or during the set if you've got the, ahem, dough. Free, 19 January.
