From Medicine to the Cloud: Technology in Healthcare âTechnology in healthcareâ is a wide-ranging topic. It incorporates tiny bar-coded labels on medication and room-filling MRI machines and robotic surgery suites. Whether your facility is 10 years or 100 years old, its suites and treatment centers have been subjected to a variety of technical changes on a yearly basis. In older hospitals, keeping the technology working often requires extensive remodeling to maintain electrical safety while providing enough power, including for emergencies. New facilities are designed with greater capabilities for electrical expansion, easily accessed and updated wiring, and omnipresent wireless networking. In the area of patient safety, technology is often first implemented in the handling and dispensing of medication. University of California-San Diego Health (UCSD Health) is one of five academic medical centers within the 10-campus University of California system. Three UCSD Health hospitals with a combined capacity of 563 beds received a Hospital Safety Score of âAâ from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog that rates overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
