Discover this city's greatest stories with the Museum of London

One city. Two museums. Nearly half a million years' worth of history. On Wednesday 19 May the Museum of London and the Museum of London Docklands both reopen their doors to once again plunge visitors into the capital's past.

Travel through time to prehistoric London then work your way back up to the present day at the Museum of London — located just five minutes from St Paul's — where you'll explore everything from war, to plague, to revolution. Or head to West India Quay's Museum of London Docklands for a closer look at how the docks of the River Thames shaped our city.

Both museums are totally free to visit but you will need to reserve tickets. You can do that right now by clicking below, or read on to discover what's on, including a few exciting new additions that even the most dedicated London history buff might not know about.

Free Exhibitions

Both museums were forced to cut short two hotly-anticipated exhibitions due to COVID-19. Now, though, they're back. Discover the Havering Hoard — the city's largest ever Bronze Age cache — at the Museum of London Docklands. Then, over at the Museum of London, there's Dub London, a new display that charts the far-reaching impact of dub reggae in the capital.

Family Fun

With free activity sheets, interactive exhibits, and immersive areas including a recreation of an Anglo-Saxon home and a Victorian shopping gallery, kids love the Museum of London. Meanwhile, the Museum of London Docklands is opening its massively popular Mudlarks children's gallery, where your little ones can learn through play, for the first time since March 2020.

450,000 Years Of History

From the devastation wrought by the Black Death or Great Fire, to the hedonism of the swinging sixties or Vauxhall's 18th-century pleasure gardens, this is a chance to explore London history in all its complexities. The museum collections are so vast that even if you've visited many times before, you're guaranteed to discover a side of the capital you never knew existed.
