Free festival fun for all the familyFrom The British Academy to Brentford
The British Academy Summer Showcase is back! Here’s a unique way to discover cutting-edge research shaping how we see the world today… a free festival of ideas packed with interactive exhibits, creative workshops, talks, screenings and more. Welcome to The British Academy Summer Showcase 2025. This two-day extravaganza takes place next week at the headquarters of the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences, which you’ll find close to The Mall and St James's Park, in a rather spectacular Georgian townhouse. Tickets to the Summer Showcase's Friday Late on 20 June have already sold out (join the waitlist here), but there’s still time to snap up a spot at the festival’s no-less-fascinating family-friendly day on Saturday 21 June. It’s headlined by linguist and British Academy Book Prize winner Ross Perlin. Alongside his discussion on the importance of linguistic diversity, there are talks on everything from the impact of global population shifts to study of laughter. On 21 June, visitors will also have the chance to write poetry inspired by the birds of St James’s Park, compare their skills to those of a bumblebee, or explore an accessible Sensory Room. There’s a wealth of exhibits to discover, too — including a history of fancy dress and an immersive journey through food, migration and memory. A classical favourite at Cadogan HallJoin the City of London Sinfonia and Brighton Festival Chorus for a sublime summer concert featuring one of the world's most popular pieces of classical music. Watch the orchestra perform Vaughan Williams’ poignant and tranquil The Lark Ascending alongside violinist Alexandra Wood on 22 June. The programme also includes Duruflé’s Requiem and the UK premiere of Libby Croad's The Brontë Suite. Our show of the weekGreat Scott! We’ve got tickets up for grabs for Back to the Future: The Musical from just £24. The stage adaptation of the classic 80s adventure film is a proper spectacle, with cracking special effects, hits from the soundtrack and original music. Unless you have access to a certain time-travelling DeLorean, you’ll want to book by the end of the week to save. Floating markets, kayaks & live musicThe Brentford Canal Festival is back! Later this month, you’re invited to celebrate the waterways of west London with a day of performances, vintage shopping, workshops and kayaking sessions. The best bit? It’s free to attend.
