All filler, no killer: A trophy tale for the ages

This story isn’t a new one, but it’s enough to make me laugh every time — and you can still find the exhibit at Gripsholm Castle in Sweden. Back in the 18th Century, Sweden’s King Frederick I was presented with an impressive hunting trophy: the pelt and bones of an African Lion. Excited to show off his new prize, the king commissioned the royal taxidermist to stuff and mount the beast for his hall. There was only one problem: this man had never seen a lion before. The taxidermist tried his best using the tools and parts he had available, but the result was one of the most unfortunate-looking taxidermy animals ever. Not only did he get the lion’s body shape completely wrong, but the face looks like a cartoon character with big googly eyes. To make matters worse, a long, drooping tongue is hanging out of the lion’s ridiculous, oversized mouth. At least the king didn’t need a court jester to make his guests laugh anymore.

Google search “King Frederick lion” and prepare to laugh yourself silly.
