Some MoneySavers finish their Christmas shopping by the end of January. Not everyone can be that organised though, and with the big fella soon to slip down the chimney, some still have 'need-buys' to do. So today our aim's to help make that easier, quicker & cheaper.

Do a budget of what you can afford to spend, and then make a list of what you need, not just as an organisational tool, but to help curb your impulses. Christmas is just one day, don't ruin your new year for it. DON'T BORROW, it's not worth it. And perhaps there's still time to cull what you need to buy, with a last-minute no unnecessary presents pact.

1. Abandon ye shopping basket all those who enter... Log in to your online shopping account, add what you want in the basket, then fail to finish - within 48 hours many companies often send you codes to tempt you back.

Martin asked for examples of this on X (Twitter) last year, and the most common firms doing it seemed to be Argos, Currys and Morrisons - see our list of retailers which offer abandoned basket discounts. As Louise told us on Facebook this week: "I did this and got £8 off an £80 spend last night from Argos."

2. It's often more meaningful, more fun, and doesn't reduce your bank account. Why not give a gift via our free printable Christmas gift cheques? Simply pledge to do something on it when it's presented back to you. Whether it's babysitting for a friend, breakfast in bed, cook them a feast, or give them a foot or other massage. Imagination's the limit.

3. Last ORDEEERRRSSS - go quick for cheapest delivery. The last dates to get pre-Christmas delivery without paying a premium are close. Indeed, TOMORROW (Wed) is the last standard order date for companies such as Currys, JD Sports and Disney Store. After that, if you want things delivered in time, expect to pay more. 4. Don't assume you can just return things for a full refund. Over 50% of people wrongly assume if you buy something in store and change your mind, you've a legal right to a refund. As Martin's new video explains, while some shops do have policies allowing it, they don't need to (unless it's faulty) and it can leave you stuck.

Thankfully, the rules are different online. Here, you do have a statutory right to change your mind - you've legally got 14 days to tell 'em and 14 days after that to send it back (that's the law, if their websites say different as some do, they're wrong). Yet even here, be aware, there are exclusions, the big ones being personalised or perishable items.

5. Get 1% near-instant cashback on your debit card spending. The Chase Bank* debit card pays you 1% cashback on almost all spending up to £15/mth, so you effectively get whatever you buy on it discounted. Crucially, you don't need to switch bank to get it, you can use it as a second account (just load it with the money you'll spend in advance), and it doesn't do a hard credit-check when you apply, just a 'soft' ID-check.

Bigger spender? Amex's Everyday CREDIT card offers 5% cashback for 5mths, up to a max £125 paid after a year, yet it's a credit card so ensure you pay it off IN FULL each month to avoid the 31% rep APR.

Five Amazon tricks & tools to bag a discount

The giant e-tailer has different sub-sites, let's call them basement levels, which can ramp down the price if you know to look there...

6. Amazon Resale 50%+ discounts on oft as-new returned goods. This resells returned or slightly-damaged items of the latest models - such as laptops, kitchen appliances and tablets - at knockdown prices (it used to be called Amazon Warehouse). Yet it can prove tricky to spot the best bargains in this treasure trove of deals - so we built the Amazon Resale Discount Finder tool to make it less taxing (like Amazon).

Tell it the brand, or item you're looking for, such as 'toaster', and it'll display the % saving compared to buying new. You can filter by brand or condition, and order results by the biggest discount, eg, we found £160 Samsung Galaxy Buds3 earphones 'like-new' that would be £219 full-price at Amazon.

And many have used the tool and saved large, such as Lisa on Facebook, who told us: "I got a Garmin Watch half-price. The box had some damage and there was a tiny scratch on the case. Absolute bargain." Of course, always compare prices elsewhere before buying. Our Amazon Resale guide has full info and help.

7. Amazon Renewed: Used, previous-generation tech with a one-year warranty. Amazon Renewed* is all about preowned tech products that have been tested, refurbished and look like new, such as previous generations from Apple, Samsung and Dell. It's best for slightly older tech, including phones, laptops, headphones, games consoles, smartwatches and cameras (though use our Refurbed Phone Finder for a wider range). Savings aren't always huge though, so double-check.

8. Amazon Outlet: Odds and ends, but worth a check for 15% to 70% off new overstocked items. The clearance Amazon Outlet* has 100s of brand-new excess stock which Amazon (or third-party sellers) are keen to shift, though it's hit and miss. The best way to think of it is like any store's end-of-sales clearance - it's a mix of funk, junk and a few things you may put in your trunk. We found a Barbie camper van set for £19, reduced from £45. Do check prices though - not everything's discounted.

9. Is 12% off a good deal? Check past Amazon prices with CamelCamelCamel. Amazon can play fast and loose with what a discount actually is. Is it off the recommended retail price, the normal selling price... or something else? And, if you don't know what the discount's off, is it actually a good deal? To find out, use CamelCamelCamel's price history tracking tool. For example, a Shark FlexFusion hair styler is "12% off" at £327 - but the tool tells us it was £296 last month.

10. Spending £30 to £35 and not got Amazon Prime? Usually Amazon charges for delivery on orders less than £35. If you're just below it, it can be cheaper to add a small extra item than pay for delivery. The Amazon free delivery tool finds suitable extras for you.

11. Can't find a discount code? Try department store codes. Don't just check the site you want to buy from for a discount code - online stores that sell a range of brands often have a workaround. For example, La Redoute stocks Adidas, Converse, Levi's and more, and has up to 40% off selected items using the code 'MERRY' until 11.59pm tomorrow (Wed). 12. For bigger items especially, use a shopping comparison site. We like PriceSpy and PriceRunner, though there's also the ubiquitous Google Shopping.

13. Buying a new mobile? Our Cheap Mobile Finder tool allows you to find the cheapest deals from over 60 retailers and resellers. If you know what phone you want, use our cheapest new handset tool (often cheaper than buying outright, plus you can usually get 100+GB/mth data too), or use our Refurb Finder. 14. Haggle big discounts online. While buying online is usually cheaper, the one advantage of buying in store is you may be able to haggle. Yet sometimes there's a way around this - if you get a window offering a live chat (as opposed to an automated chatbot), don't dismiss it. See how to haggle with online chats.

15. Last posting dates. There's still time (just about) to cut the cost of sending parcels for Christmas. Use discount courier websites to get the big firms to deliver for less than you'd pay direct. Full details, including firm-by-firm final posting dates, in Cheap parcel delivery.

Give charity gifts this Christmas

16. Another low hassle, often more productive, way to give. Why not agree to give to good causes in someone (or perhaps everyone) else's name? From vaccines to beehives, our charity gifts guide is packed with suggestions. These are just a couple of them to give you an idea...

17. Hunt out online outlet stores. Don't drive miles to outlet villages to snap up end-of-line bargains, just go online. Lots of big names, such as B&Q, Ninja and even Tesco, offer substantial discounts on unsold lines through online outlets. Our Outlets deals page lists over 20, for huge clothing, homeware and other discounts.

18. Defend yourself - pay just 1p on a credit card to protect £100s. Buy goods costing over £100 (and under £30,000), and even if you pay just 1p on a credit card - the rest any other way - the card company's jointly liable with the retailer for the WHOLE amount. It's the veritable financial superhero, especially if a firm then goes bust. See full info in Section 75 protection.

- Spending £100 or less, or on a debit card? You can still claim for faulty or undelivered goods under the less well-known chargeback scheme.

19. Buy through cashback sites & apps. Check if you can make merry by buying via a top cashback site and getting money back. Plus the easy, free Airtime app tracks your spending at 200+ retailers and pays 1% to 15% cashback, which you can redeem as credit on your mobile bill (for O2, EE, Vodafone, Three and more). You CAN use this on top of cashback sites for a double win.

20. How to buy second-hand in a first-class way. Grab goods for a fraction of the original recommend retail price - and it's planet-friendly. We've tips to track down uber-bargains in 30 Vinted tips, eBay buying and Facebook Marketplace. Clare told us on Facebook: "I'm addicted to Vinted. I'd say 90% of my clothes come from there. I even got a brand-new wedding dress with tags still on for £23. I've sold a few things too."

21. Predictions of deals yet to come, including Asos and H&M sales. Scrooge may've needed ghosts to see into the future - we just track the marketing patterns of major firms over the last decade to do the same. What do you pay for AA or RAC cover? It can be £200+
Slash breakdown cover costs to just £57/yr FULL SERVICE

As we head deeper into winter, roads are busier and it's colder, wetter and windier - sadly meaning a higher risk of breakdowns and accidents. So it's an important time to consider your breakdown cover. Millions have it, yet many are being ripped off by paying way over the odds (especially likely if you just auto-renew). Full help in our slash breakdown costs guide, but here's enough info for you to quickly drive down prices...

Cheapest FULL service policy £57/yr for you AND your partner - roadside recovery, home start & onward travel. AutoAid's* been among our top picks for likely nearly two decades, and usually gets strong feedback. Its £57.28/yr policy covers you & your spouse or live-in partner in any car you/they drive. If you've a car 10+ years, there's a £25 call-out fee. If it's 16+ years, you pay £76.99/yr (plus any call-out fees).

Eversure Gold* costs £57.50/yr and has similar cover. There's no call-out fee for older cars, though it won't cover cars 16+ years. We've less feedback, but what we do have is decent.

Both of these companies use local recovery operators rather than their own fleets, which helps slash the cost, and based on anecdotal feedback, the call-out times tend to be similar to the big operators.
Want a new AA/RAC policy? Use a cashback site to save 50%+. This is for new policies, so if you're with the AA go for the RAC and vice versa. Buy direct, and even basic cover can cost around £95/yr, full cover over £210/yr, yet buy via the right cashback sites, and it can work out as '£62/yr' basic or '£115/yr' full service.
Renewing with the big firms: DON'T just auto-renew, always HAGGLE. Breakdown cover success rates are higher than any other sector. Of those who tried, both the RAC and the AA had success rates of 83% in the poll we've just done. Full help in breakdown cover haggling tips & techniques, but try these to start you off...

- Use charm, cheek and a smile: Don't be aggressive - you've no right to a discount (only a right to leave).
- If it won't play ball, ask 'to cancel': This is likely to get you to 'customer retentions', where it's their job to keep you.
- Don't be rushed into it: If you're still not happy, say you "need to check with the wife / boyfriend / dog" to buy time.
- If you fail, try again: Wait a few days - it may be that a different person can offer you something more.

MoneySaver Nadine recently emailed letting us know how she used our tips to halve her renewal cost: "Thanks so much for your top haggling tips for breakdown cover. I thought I'd give it a go when our auto-renewal quote came in at over £320. One phone call later, it's now £166 [a saving of £154/yr]. I can't thank you enough."

Longest NO-FEE 0% balance transfer - shift card debt to absolutely no cost till 2026. Shift debt to a 0% card and you usually pay a one-off fee on the amount moved, but if you can repay quicker, there's a new longest NO-FEE card, Barclaycard's up to 14mths 0%. If you're pre-approved via our eligibility calc (link takes you there), you'll get the full 14mths no-fee - an easy winner. Martin: Please help us get the word out...
Only 4 days left: Last chance to claim Winter Fuel Payment. Up to 700,000 State Pensioners are eligible but missing out on this and potentially £1,000s more

For the first time, this winter the £200 (£300 for over-80s) Winter Fuel Payment (WFP) - which is for those of State Pension age - is now means-tested. To get the WFP now, you need to claim and get Pension Credit - which is a top-up payment for those with lower incomes that is worth a further £4,000 on average. So this is important.

Deadline to claim & get Winter Fuel Payment (WFP) is this Fri 20 Dec by phone, or Sat online. If you apply by then and are eligible for Pension Credit, you can still get this year's WFP. Though it's actually a backdated payment, so you had to have been eligible for Pension Credit in September (for most, little will have changed so that's not an issue). The Department for Work and Pensions says the average application time is just 16 mins - and though it can then take weeks to process, you should get it back-paid to application.

Don't assume you're not eligible. Check if you're due Pension Credit

It's for those of State Pension age (66+) and depends on TOTAL WEEKLY INCOME:

Income means money from working, private pensions, State Pensions, benefits...

SINGLE: Under £218/wk? LIKELY to get it. Under £235/wk? You may get it.
COUPLE: Under £333/wk? LIKELY to get it. Under £350/wk? You may get it.
A 'couple' means spouses, civil partners, or someone you live with as a couple (both of State Pension age).
You can be accepted on even higher income levels if you also get Attendance Allowance.

If in doubt, JUST CHECK. Better to ask & not get, than not ask & miss out...

And we've had a lot of success on this, as Elizabeth emailed last month: "Thanks for prompting me to look again for my mother, who has Alzheimer's. In light of this year's changes, I noticed on your site about Additional Income Allowance when in receipt of Attendance Allowance. This made the difference for my mother, who now receives a small amount of Pension Credit." Which also means she's due WFP.

Savings and investments under a total of £10,000 are ignored. If you've more, for every £500 over £10,000, it counts as £1/wk income (if only it really generated that much), so you can still be eligible for Pension Credit even with a whack of savings. As Lynn emailed three weeks ago: "I support my stepmother who's 95. I use your info to help her make good finance decisions with her savings, the amount of which I thought would make her ineligible for Pension Credit. But I was hugely surprised that not only is she going to now receive £59/wk [so £3,000/yr] (backdated to May), but she also now gets the Winter Fuel Payment and will be refunded her TV licence money. I'm glad I applied for her, and thank you for your continued guidance."
High housing costs (even in some assisted living) are taken into account. Again, this means you can qualify if you earn significantly above the standard Pension Credit thresholds (and it may mean a Council Tax Reduction too), and you may also be due Housing Benefit or Support for Mortgage Interest. So it's worth trying.
Pension Credit has a superpower... it's a gateway benefit. While many on Pension Credit get £1,000s a year paid to them, even if it's only worth thruppence for you, it's still worth claiming as it's a gateway to other state help. Just as it opens the door for the Winter Fuel Payment, it may trigger...

- Free TV licence for over-75s (normally £170/yr). See how to apply for your free TV licence.
- Renters' Housing Benefit worth £1,000s. Housing Benefit is an extra sum you may be due.
- Council Tax Reductions. This can be worth £1,000s/yr. See how to cut Council Tax costs.
- Energy bill reductions. This includes £25/wk Cold Weather Payments and the £150 Warm Home Discount.

Should we give my in-laws the flight cancellation compensation we claimed? My in-laws took us and our kids to Greece for a lovely family holiday, which they paid for. Our flight out was cancelled due to a technical issue, and we didn't fly until the following day, after much stress rebooking our flights.
