You'll dig this trivia on London's tunnels

Excuse the pun, but tunnels are anything but boring. At Londonist, we often find ourselves taking a deep dive into the corridors that worm their way beneath the capital. The most famous, of course, are tube tunnels: we've written whistlestop histories on the Central, Bakerloo, Jubilee, Metropolitan, Victoria, Northern and Waterloo & City lines. We also located London's 'forgotten' tube line and, er, dug out a story from the archives about a train full of passengers that was abandoned in a tunnel. Rude.

But it ain't just about the Underground. Did you know that these Cold War era tunnels, which inspired James Bond no less, could soon open to the public? Or that the Blackwall Tunnel is over 125 years old, and has a fascinating history? (Its neighbour the Silvertown Tunnel is so new, it hasn't even opened). And have you ever ventured beneath the Thames via the Woolwich foot tunnel? (It's a slightly unsettling urban exploration all Londoners should try once).

As for the deepest tunnel of all? You'll be wanting our handy infographic which asks: How Deep Does London Go?
