4 Steps to Prepare for Severe Weather
While most people know that they should have water, batteries, and canned and/or dried food on hand, there are many other critical steps to take when preparing for a severe weather incident. Some of the unique tips found in the severe weather preparedness brochure include:

  1. Put important documents—such as birth certificates, insurance cards, and medical history—on a flash drive. Include a photo of your pet.
  2. Have a paper map of your area. Remember that your GPS may not work following a disaster.
  3. Invest in a home standby generator to keep your power on in the event of a long-term power outage caused by a disaster.
  4. Keep a disaster prep kit in your car in case you need to evacuate quickly or are away from home when disaster strikes. Include a 2-week supply of medications.
How Much Power Do You Need?
Here at The Old Farmer’s Almanac in New Hampshire, where it can snow 5 months a year, many of us have home generators. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend having a backup source in case of an outage. We know too well that it provides peace of mind, turning on automatically when an outage strikes and keeping lights, refrigerators, heat, security systems, and sump pumps on.

We also wouldn’t hesitate to recommend our friends at Cummins, from Columbus, Indiana. Cummins is a longtime global leader in generators, powering everything from the Statue of Liberty to Mount Rushmore. They are now bringing their business expertise to homes—and even offer a completely free calculator to estimate your home’s generator needs.
Authorized dealers from Cummins will also personally come out and visit your home and work with you to assess your power needs. There’s no risk. Schedule a free in-home consultation to learn more.

And if you schedule a home assessment, Cummins will give you a free disaster prep kit while supplies last.

Disasters don't plan ahead, but you can. Stay safe!
