There is a great irony occurring today in hospitals around the country: Attempts to roll out powerful communication tools are failing because IT and clinical staff themselves speak very different languages. In fact, disconnects between IT staff and clinical technology end users are common and can lead to project delays, security concerns and other conflicts, which all affect adoption and efficacy. When Sarah Cypher, director of nursing at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, caught a glimpse of the secure messaging technology a fellow leader was using, she knew she was looking at a powerful communication tool. But until that moment, she had no idea the mobile application she was looking at was already in use at her organization.
This realization highlights the disconnect that often occurs between IT staff evaluating and rolling out new technology and the clinical end users who will ultimately use the capabilities for patient care.
