Operating with Data: A Surgeon Helps Patients with Statistics and Scalpel

When David Kashmer, chief of surgery for Signature Healthcare in Brockton, Mass., first began using data to improve what happens in the operating theater, he met resistance and doubt. Ten years later, Kashmer continues to use simple statistical analysis to yield big improvements in patient outcomes—and his skeptical colleagues have become believers.
