Frey picks Newark deputy mayor as next Minneapolis police chief
Brian O’Hara, the deputy mayor of Newark, N.J., who oversees policing strategy in that city, is Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s choice to be the next Minneapolis police chief. The Minneapolis City Council must still approve O’Hara. The nomination is likely go to the City Council Thursday next week. The mayor's office is hoping the new chief will be confirmed by early November.
Ian regains hurricane strength as it heads to South Carolina
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm’s maximum sustained winds increased Thursday to 75 mph. It was centered about 240 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina, and moving northeast at 10 mph.
 
Minnesota health officials raise concerns over measles cases
Another case of measles has been confirmed in Minnesota, bringing the total to 13 since June. All of the cases are among unvaccinated children, ranging in age from 2-years-old to kids in their early teens, state health officials said in a press release.
Jury selection set to begin in UMN student's lawsuit alleging Chinese billionaire raped her
In 2019, Jingyao Liu sued Richard Liu and his company JD.com, alleging she was raped by him after a business dinner in August 2018 in Minneapolis. Jingyao Liu and Richard Liu, who goes by the name Liu Qiangdong in China, are not related.

Driest September on record for Twin Cities; drought widens in Minnesota
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor maps show drought has expanded across Minnesota from 15 percent last week to now 22 percent of Minnesota. Severe drought remains at 4 percent of Minnesota and includes much of the Twin Cities area and part of southwestern Minnesota around Marshall.
