A film-lover's guide to London

Did you know that London will soon boast its own answer to Hollywood? Plans for the capital’s largest film studios were announced back in 2020, and Eastbrook Studios is expected to launch in Barking and Dagenham this year. It’ll build on a rich legacy of filmmaking – this is the city, after all, that gave rise to Hammer Horror (established on the Soho street known as ‘Film Row’) brought together Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and produced one of the greatest directors of all time – Alfred Hitchcock.

That’s before we even get started on the London locations that have been immortalised on the silver screen. From James Bond to the MCU, many a blockbuster has used our fair city as its backdrop. If you’re on the hunt for your next London-y watch, we recommend following this artist, who cleverly recreates scenes filmed in the capital. More inspiration can be found on this map, which is absolutely stuffed with titles, each one placed in the part of London it’s most closely associated with.

No film-themed guide to London would be complete without paying tribute to the city’s cinemas. Like the ones which screened Britain’s first talkies, or UK’s first “cinema-pub’. Then there are thrones enriching cultural life in London today. Click here for a selection of our favourite independent cinemas, or  – now that warmer weather has finally arrived – click below for our guide to London’s outdoor cinemas and start getting excited for summer.
