Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks and Bruce Springsteen kicked off the primetime special Celebrating America event for President Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday.

Springsteen opened the show by performing his hit song “Land of Hope and Dreams.”

Hanks was host for the event, and was introduced following Springsteen’s performance. He highlighted Biden’s calls for unity, noting how divisive the previous weeks, and years, have been.

The event was a major social media moment, and Hanks in particular was heaped with praise. And he even ignited the new administrations first scandal: his potentially being frozen to death!

Or, that seemed to be the case, at least, as a clearly chilled and coat-less Hanks ignited an outpouring of concern online as he hosted the new president’s inaugural celebration on a cold night in Washington, D.C.

That, too, prompted a slew of tweets, these (jokingly) concerned for his well-being.

For a national treasure, a winning media moment can be pretty easy to come by. But an historic winning one? Less common. Tom Hanks, though, is anything but common.

MEDIA LOSER:
Media Losers

We're not calling the media a bunch of losers, but it seems that a great deal of Americans are, which is what makes the media, in toto, today's loser.

A new poll finds that trust in the media has never been lower, and that a majority of Americans believe the outlets bringing them their news are more interested in pushing a political agenda.

According to a survey conducted by the global communications firm Edelman (via Axios, which obtained the results exclusively), 46% of Americans trust traditional media. That’s the lowest number ever recorded in the 20 years that Edelman has obtained the data.

That mistrust stems, in large part, from a widespread belief that delivering the news is not the No. 1 priority for people who deliver the news. The Edelman survey found that 58% of Americans think “most news organizations are more concerned with supporting an ideology or political position than with informing the public.” And 56% of people believe the fourth estate is “purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false or gross exaggerations.”

The Edelman number tracks with other finds, too. Read the rest here from Mediaite's Joe DePaolo.

The A-Block

Bipartisan Commission

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Thursday renewed and emphasized his call for a bipartisan commission to investigate allegations that members of the House contributed to the unrest that took place on Jan. 6. It's a goal shared by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The (Really Ridiculously) ODD Couple?

Mike Lindell, MyPillow CEO and adamant supporter of former President Donald Trump, reportedly had a secret romance with 30 Rock star Jane Krakowski, according to reports.

We're serious, they are seriously saying that.

This Doesn't Help

Things like this probably aren't helping with the media's trust issue mentioned in our loser column:

The Worst Thing

“This is the only president in American history who incited an insurrection against Congress that could have resulted in assassinations and hostage-taking and, conceivably, the cancellation of a free presidential election and the fracturing of a democracy,” says presidential historian Michael Beschloss in a new interview. “That’s a fact, and it won’t change in 50 years. It’s very hard to think of a scenario under which someone might imagine some wonderful thing that Donald Trump did that will outshine that. He did, literally, the worst thing that an American president could ever do.”

Limbaugh Melts Down

Rush Limbaugh churned out a series of conspiracy theories regarding the election and the inauguration, during a rant claiming that the new president did not legitimately win the 2020 election.

Hannity Melts Down

Sean Hannity was not at all impressed with President Biden's inaugural address. "“I’m going to be very blunt, honest, and objective here,” he said. “It sounded like a student council president acceptance speech! Zero substance.

Chinese Embassy Melts Down

Twitter has locked the official account for China’s Embassy to the United States for a message claiming the country’s “reeducation” camps helped women to become more than “baby-making machines.”

Lincoln Project to Target 'Jim Crow Caucus'

Lincoln Project co-founder and never-Trump conservative Rick Wilson told Y’all-itics, a Texas-focused political podcast, that now that Donald Trump is no longer president, the super-PAC will shift its focus to Sen. Ted Cruz.

They Said It’d Never Happen — All the Public Figures Who Insisted Trump’s Second Term Would Begin January 20
THEY WERE WRONG

They said this wouldn’t happen — Joe Biden was not going to be inaugurated as the 46th president on Wednesday.

Of course, it did just happen — and responsible media and political figures recognized that reality as far back as November 4th.

But for these die-hard Trump supporters, misleading a legion of dead-end MAGA fans — and fueling toxic conspiracies like those from QAnon extremists — was more important than grappling with now ex-President Donald Trump’s clear, certified loss in the 2020 election.

Fauci Announces Big Change

Chief Medical Adviser on COVID-19 to the President and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci told the World Health Organization that President Joe Biden will keep the U.S. in the global body and will meet its “financial obligations,” reversing a Trump-era decision to exit the organization.

Dr. Fauci spoke at a 4 a.m. session of the WHO Executive Board Meeting, and started right off by thanking the organization and announcing the reversal of Trump’s decision to leave the group he spent much of the past year scapegoating for the coronavirus pandemic.

Well worth watching.
