SIGN: Don't Let Trump Destroy Public Media!

Friend,

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr just opened a sham investigation into NPR and PBS. His seat as chairman is barely warm, but this is exactly the kind of abuse of power you’d expect from a man who wrote a chapter in Project 2025’s policy agenda.1

The FCC should never be weaponized to intimidate journalists and silence their efforts to hold powerful people accountable.

In his brief tenure as FCC chairman, Carr has also threatened to pull the broadcast licenses of ABC, CBS and NBC affiliates for airing segments that didn’t fall in lockstep with the new regime’s demands.2 By scrambling to please Trump, the FCC chairman has led the agency far out of step with the American people and their need for accurate news and information.

Carr’s actions come at a dangerous time: Under the Trump administration, we can expect to see renewed efforts to destroy public media. Zeroing out federal funding for public media has long been a dream of Republican lawmakers, but their efforts have always met opposition from people of every political persuasion — including many of you. Americans routinely rank NPR and PBS among the nation’s most-trusted institutions.3 In every survey, people say they support taxpayer money for public and community media.

Free Press Action will oppose all efforts to gut public media, but we need your help: If we can convince even just a handful of GOP lawmakers to block cuts to federal funding, that will be enough to save NPR and PBS for now.

Public media deepens civic engagement and holds the powerful accountable — we can’t let Brendan Carr or Donald Trump take it away. Sign our petition if you agree. *One click on the link or button will instantly add your name to our petition if we have your details on file.*

To Members of Congress:

Our nation’s public-media system produces great journalism but is one of the most poorly funded in the world.

Drastic cuts to that funding would do little for government efficiency. The shifting balance of power in Washington should not jeopardize the news programming and children’s entertainment that your constituents value.

Please reject all efforts to defund public media.

The Trump administration aims to strip our democratic system of all accountability mechanisms, including the sorts of journalism that hold our country’s rich and powerful accountable.

Public-media outlets ranging from the Gulf States Newsroom and the Mountain West News Bureau to Pacifica Radio and New Jersey Spotlight News are doing great work to inform communities.

Trump and his billionaire cronies want to undermine the public interest, reshape the government and rewrite the truth. Thriving and independent public-media outlets can help protect against this totalitarian nightmare scenario — it’s up to us to protect federal funding for journalism that informs people of threats to their most fundamental rights.
