Dear Black People, Protect Yourselves by Avoiding These Folks on December 21

Christina stepping out of her car in Lovecraft Country

It's time for the mentor to appear out of the ongoing cornfields of the middle of nowhere. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, after all, some of the greatest superpowered beings have gone through rigorous training in order to hone their abilities. However, some of the folks who emerge just when you figure out how to lift a bus are not on the up and up. They seem like they are, at first, but over time you realize that having them as your inspiration will ruin your entire life.

The Future of Wonder Woman 3 Is Uncertain, but That’s Not a Bad Thing

As of right now, Wonder Woman 3 is on pause. That doesn't mean it's not happening or there aren't any plans; there's just a lot going on and, as Patty Jenkins is working on a Rogue Squadron movie for Lucasfilm, she has her hands full right this very second. Still, there is a future for Diana Prince—it just might not be the one that Patty Jenkins originally had planned.

We here at the Mary Sue know a lot about, well, Mary Sues and so when the internet discourse went off today about who in the Star Wars universe is the real Mary Sue, it was sort of like a Bat-signal for us. And it came thanks to someone with her own bat-credentials—legendary comics writer […]

Pouring One out for All the Female-Led Superhero Movies We Were Supposed to Get in 2020

Scarlet Johansson as Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame

Birds of Prey has the distinction of being the highest-grossing comic book movie of 2020, but it was supposed to be the beginning of a big year for female-led comic book movies. Instead, the disappointing box office it gained due to COVID, was a specter of the way Wonder Woman 1984 would fare.

December 21st Is My Superpowered “Let Black People Have Some Fun in This Godforsaken Year” Day

Sparkle Cadet's transformation sequence in "Craig of the Creek"

There's this thing that some of y'all do where you assume that being silly means we're forgetting the real issues. Celebrating is seen as being uneducated about the trials and tribulations of Blackness, and putting energy into joy is seen as being lazy in other areas. "Why waste time on (insert harmless fun) when you could be focusing on (insert the thing that's been devastating you for days/weeks/months/years/etc.)."

Mateo Askaripour And his novel, Black Buck

Though 2020 was a year of heaviness, it was also a year of powerful Black creativity. From music and Film/TV to (of course) books, the abundance of work that emerged this year beautifully illustrated the nuances of the Black experience, while also making important social commentary on the shortcomings that still need to be confronted.

Let’s Talk About Emma in Ryan Murphy’s Adaptation of The Prom

The Prom broadway big number sequence "Time to Dance" with Emma, Alyssa, Company

Flawed as it may be, I enjoyed 2018’s The Prom and though it did not last long on Broadway it still managed to get multiple Tony nominations in 2019 including for Best Actress with Caitlin Kinnunen. Which is why the Ryan Murphy adaptation which aired on Netflix is such a disappointment for how they treated Emma.
