Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Jamie Gangel

CNN’s Jamie Gangel spoke to an impressive number of former Trump administration officials regarding claims that the former President had a “standing order” that allowed him to declassify documents as he saw fit.

Last week, John Solomon reported that the Trump team claimed the former president "had a standing order that documents removed from the Oval Office and taken to the residence were deemed to be declassified the moment he removed them."

On CNN’s The Lead Thursday, Gangel told host Jake Tapper she had spoken to 18 former Trump officials. All disputed the claim.

“It wasn’t just a couple of people,” Gangel said. “We reached out to 18 former very senior Trump officials. White House, intelligence community, Justice Department, even his former chiefs of staff.”

While some of the 18 laughed it off, Gangel got some to dispute it on the record, with one of the sources calling it "bullshit."

"Nothing approaching an order that foolish was ever given, and I can’t imagine anyone that worked at the White House after me that would have simply shrugged their shoulders and allowed that order to go forward without dying in the ditch trying to stop it," former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly told Gangel.

Former acting Trump chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, former national security adviser John Bolton and former national security official Olivia Troye also disputed the claim

MEDIA LOSER:
Brian Kilmeade

Fox News host Brian Kilmeade spewed dangerous misinformation on theInflation Reduction Act while guest hostingTucker Carlson Tonight last week.

Last Thursday, Kilmeade warned that an increase in funding to the IRS would allow government agents to “hunt down and kill" Americans who don’t pay the required amount.

“Before the IRS took it down yesterday, there was a posting on their website that listed the job requirements for a special agent’s position," he said.

"The major duties require agents to ‘carry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force, if necessary.'”

Kilmeade went on to compare the IRS to James Bond, adding, "But instead of hunting down evil maniacs, these agents hunt down and kill middle-class taxpayers that don’t pay enough?”

“It’s Joe Biden’s new army," he continued, pushing a completely senseless argument.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough slammed the ridiculous rhetoric on Friday’s Morning Joe, accusing Kilmeade of “deliberately trying to get Americans” to harm Internal Revenue Service agents.

"This is not Infowars. This is mainstream, pro-Trump rhetoric. And they are deliberately trying to get Americans to a position of where they’ll do harm to IRS agents," said Scarborough.

While he did not call out Kilmeade by name, he went on to blast "a top Fox News host saying that the IRS is coming to, quote, ‘hunt down and kill middle-class taxpayers.’"

The A-Block

Stelter exits CNN

Chris Licht’s
CNN has pulled the plug on Reliable Sources, the 30 year old media program hosted by Brian Stelter, who is leaving the network.

Stelter joined the network nearly a decade ago, replacing Howard Kurtz as host of the Sunday media program.

Stelter, 36, burst onto the scene as the anonymous blogger behind TV Newser when he was still in college.

He was snapped up by the New York Times, where he served as a media reporter working alongside David Carr (readers of this newsletter will recall their star turn in Page One, a fascinating documentary about the Times released when iPads were considered the next big thing in news).

At CNN, Stelter helmed the Reliable Sources newsletter, a massively influential document of the day in media news, hitting the inboxes of everyone in the industry around 11 pm six nights a week.

Stelter’s prolific output and sharp reporting earned him fans.

But his assertive coverage during the Trump era earned him critics, most importantly Warner-Discovery executive John Malone, who some insiders blame for forcing Stelter out (Malone denies this: in a statement to the Times, he claimed to have no role in the saga, but said he wants CNN’s news operation to become more “centrist”).

Whatever your thoughts on Stelter — and Fox News hosts certainly have a lot, perhaps an unhealthy amount — he undeniably helped shaped the media industry for the last decade.

Axios’ Sarah Fischer put it best:

“Brian is a very rare mix of talent, hustle and kindness,” she wrote on Twitter. “He works harder than almost any reporter I know.”

One LA Dodgers reporter was left rolling around on the ground, clutching his side after what should have been a fun trip down the Milwaukee Brewers home run slide.

The slide is typically reserved for the Brewers mascot after each home run, but since the Dodgers were in town for the away game, field reporter David Vassegh volunteered to try it himself.

Vassegh can be heard screaming “holy crap, holy crap, holy crap,” while spinning down, before eventually careening into the landing zone.

It was later revealed that Vassegh sustained two fractures to his wrist and arm along with six fractured ribs. Ouch.

“I do my own stunts, Tom Cruise style!” he cracked after watching the clip playback.
