Gaps in EU pesticide assessment threaten health and environment | Register now for scientific webinar organized by Secrets Toxiques: Friday October 15, 6PM CEST–7.30PM CEST | Public opinion appears more and more concerned by the adverse effects of pesticides. A poll from IFOP showed in 2019 that 89% of the French population want an end to the use of synthetic pesticides. Public concern is justified: Recent large-scale reviews have deepened the link between exposure to pesticides and, among others, various types of cancer, cognitive disorders, and Parkinson’s disease. They also show a concerning impact on foetal development. Besides, pesticides do not impact only targeted species, as they have been found to impact populations of insects and birds.
In the light of these analyses, the European Union’s pesticide assessment procedure appears to be highly incomplete and therefore action must be taken. You are invited to a scientific webinar on Friday 15 October (in English), which will present the gaps in this procedure and establish a line of action through a common public intervention by members of the scientific community.
There will be two presentations, each followed by questions: * François Veillerette, director and spokesperson of the NGO Générations Futures: Non-account of public and independent scientific literature, the case of the renewal of glyphosate’s authorization * Gilles-Eric Séralini, professor of biology and toxicology, University of Caen: Toxic compounds in commercialized products: a grievous underestimation of pesticides’ toxicity.
These presentations will be followed by a presentation of the campaign "Secrets Toxiques" (Toxic Secrets) by its co-president, which will be followed by a proposal for collective action presented by its campaign manager.
