Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Eriq Gardner

Puck’s Eriq Gardner obtained the transcript of Anderson Cooper’s deposition in a multi-million dollar defamation lawsuit filed against CNN, and discovered a number of interesting revelations about the behind-the-scenes operations of the cable news network.

“I got my hands on Cooper’s sealed deposition, a transcript stretching several hundred pages that provides details about CNN’s newsgathering policies and its star anchor’s sensitivities,” wrote Gardner.

The deposition was supposed to be filed under seal, but due to an error by the clerk of court, it was filed in the publicly-accessible court docket.

The deposition was taken for a lawsuit filed in 2016 against CNN for a report on infant deaths at St. Mary’s Medical Center after pediatric heart procedures.

Gardner summed up the CNN report, which Cooper covered during his evening television program, as presenting “an eye-catching statistic that Black alleges is deeply flawed and dishonest."

According to Gardner's report, the suit claims “experts had repeatedly warned CNN that its methodology effectively cherry-picked data by focusing only on the highest-risk procedures, and that CNN ignored these warnings."

As Gardner noted, “CNN, just like Fox News in its showdown against Dominion, will have to consult its insurers and take a measure of the state of play as the trial nears.”

Props to Gardner on landing a deposition scoop about CNN as much of the media has prioritized Dominion’s lawsuit against Fox News.

MEDIA LOSER:
Podcast Movement

Broadcasting company Cumulus Media cut ties with Podcast Movement, an annual industry conference that apologized last month for Daily Wire co-founder and podcaster Ben Shapiro making an appearance at a trade show.

Cumulus released a statement this week announcing they are “disassociating” from Podcast Movement as they are “dismayed and disappointed” by the treatment of Shapiro.

Shapiro’s company was sponsoring a booth at the trade show, but Podcast Movement later apologized for the conservative pundit’s very presence.

Podcast Movement has since deleted the widely-mocked tweet thread pleading forgiveness for Shapiro's "presence" at the conference when he visited the Daily Wire's registered booth.

In the deleted tweets, the conference took "full responsibility for the harm done by his presence," though there was no specification about the alleged “harm” Shapiro caused while there.

The conference's treatment of Shapiro, whose show has been nationally syndicated through a Cumulus owned network since 2019, was enough for Cumulus to cut ties with Podcast Movement all together.

In addition to syndicating Shapiro's podcast, Cumulus is one of the largest radio companies in the country and owns more than 400 radio stations.

The broadcasting company has now separated itself from the conference and has canceled all 2023 sponsorship plans, marking a big blow for Podcast Movement.

The A-Block

Sensitive secrets

Former President Donald Trump was in possession of the nuclear secrets of an unidentified country when FBI agents raided his home last month, according to a Washington Post report.

The Post's Devlin Barrett and Carol Leonnig reported a document seized by the bureau on Aug. 8 was so sensitive, that many inside the intelligence community do not have the clearance to access it.

Barrett joined CNN’s AC360 immediately after the news was published to discuss the reporting.

“So, some of the FBI agents who were on the scene in Mar-a-Lago, they didn’t even have the kind of clearance that would allow them to look at these documents?” Anderson Cooper asked him.

Barrett noted not even prosecutors are cleared to view such material, adding, “You’re talking about documents that should be stored in a SCIF."

“It’s a government acronym for a very secure room and should have someone who’s designated, a government official designated to keep very close tabs on those kinds of documents," he said.

The 27-year-old Australian repeatedly smashed his racket on the court, and threw it away. And then, when he was done wrecking his first racket, he took another one out of his bag and proceeded to obliterate that one as well.
