NOPD STAFFING: New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is looking to boost the New Orleans Police Department's anemic recruiting by tapping Total Community Action, a non-profit with no experience in that arena but which has two City Council members on its board. The proposal has rankled members of the Police and Justice Foundation, a non-profit which has had a recruitment contract for years, John Simerman reports.
EDUCATION BILLS: Education could be front and center in the legislative session that begins next week. Beyond a pay-raise for teachers, which has been a priority for Gov. John Bel Edwards, lawmakers will debate measures that would require third graders with reading problems to repeat the grade and would ban teachers from referring to students by names or pronouns that don't correspond with their birth certificate, Will Sentell reports.
