The Landscape
Full-time remote employees are spending an average of nine work hours per week participating in activities unrelated to the job, according to a Joblist survey. A separate survey, however, found that HR is reporting increased use of flexible work arrangements and schedules, which could mean employees are doing what they need "to maintain a healthy work/life balance and strong mental health while maintaining job productivity," writes Bryan Robinson.

Employee mental health has seen a downturn in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with workers reporting a 48% increase in depression risk in November and December, according to the recent Mental Health Index produced by Total Brain and the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions. "Managers should learn to recognize warning signs of employees who may be struggling: personality changes, irritability, fatigue, reckless behavior and weight loss are common symptoms of mental health disorders," writes Alyssa Place.
