  • Through the decades it took to secure women the right to vote, Maine activists endured a number of legislative defeats, but saw support for their movement grow with each defeat. In 1918, Maine was in the national spotlight as activists in Maine launched an effort to make Maine the first state east of the Mississippi to pass women’s suffrage at the state level.

  • More people who want to know if they have the coronavirus even if they don’t have symptoms will now be able to get tested at 10 sites across Maine run by Northern Light Health, the state’s second-largest hospital system, as a result of a state effort to provide medical providers with more resources to surveil for the virus.

USPS says Maine voters should mail in absentee ballots at least 15 days ahead of Election Day
 
  • Mainers who want to mail absentee ballots should send them 15 days before Election Day, according to a July letter from the U.S. Postal Service made public on Friday amid uproar over mail delays and their potential effect on the November election. [USPS Executive Vice President Thomas ]Marshall’s letters make a rather obvious point that states have extended the deadlines to request absentee ballots past the time when the Postal Service can guarantee delivery, but breaks from traditional communications, state election officials said.

Rockport voters will decide the fate of a proposed boutique downtown hotel

  • Voters here will decide on Tuesday the fate of a proposed 27,000-square-foot hotel after more than 300 residents signed petitions criticizing the downtown development. Some fear the building ― which rises four stories above street level ― could obstruct views of the harbor and create traffic congestion in the area.

Maine-based tiny house manufacturer says business is booming during the pandemic
  • Tiny Homes of Maine, which manufactures small trailer houses known as “tiny homes,” has seen an increase in sales during the coronavirus outbreak. People are seeking them for different reasons. 
Cargo, the stowaway cat, has found a new home and family in Maine

  • After several weeks of fostering the cat that stowed away on a military cargo plane and landed in Bangor last month, Nanci Hamlin said she is not at all surprised the feline — now named Cargo — wound up on board a flight that ended across the country.
