Time Out No. #71 | Tuesday 17 August 2021

They were born at the turn of the millennium, made it to 16 as we voted to leave Europe and became adults during a global pandemic. It’s fair to say our city’s current crop of 21-year-olds have already lived through some shit. We decided to get acquainted with no less than 20 of them in one go. Painting is the artform that just won’t quit, and this survey show – featuring dozens of brilliant contemporary brush-wielders– proves that the medium is alive, kicking, and ready to get into a fist fight.

Hayward Gallery. Sep 9-Dec 12. £12.

Frankenthaler was one of America’s most important mid-century painters, a genre-defining abstract expressionist whose big canvases stand shoulder to shoulder with any of the men of the movement, all of whom get way more attention than she does.

Dulwich Picture Gallery. Sep 15-Apr 18 2022. £16.50.

Whitechapel Gallery. Sep 29-Jan 9 2022. Free.
