Get your entire team ready for the moment surveyors walk through the front door

Using a mock survey approach that fully integrates the tracer methodology is a particularly effective way to take a snapshot of your organization’s compliance and ensure staff are ready in the event of an unannounced survey.

The four major phases to the process are:

  • Develop your mock survey approach and schedule
    • Get a good understanding of what you’re trying to accomplish and how much time you have to do so.
  • Form and train your teams
    • Ideally, the mock survey teams will have gone through a Joint Commission survey and be experts in the areas covered by the standards.
    • Be sure team members know what they’re doing.
  • Conduct the mock survey and monitor the teams’ progress
    • Keep in contact with the heads of the survey teams and make sure they’re on time, on schedule, and not encountering any roadblocks.
  • Analyze results and create an action plan
    • Prioritize issues that need immediate attention. Then further divide that list into items that can be completed by a manager and items that require the input of the whole organization.
Get a step-by-step guide to each of these phases as well as time-tested mock tracers for every department in your hospital with Survey Success: A Hospital Guide to Mock Surveys.
