Calif. Senate passes bill reclassifying gig workers

AB5, the California State Assembly bill that requires app-based businesses to treat contract workers as employees, passed the state Senate Tuesday night with a 29-11 vote. Proponents say the bill -- expected to become law -- offers wage and benefits protections to gig workers, but critics say the change will adversely affect the flexibility afforded to these individuals.

Companies may not know how caregiving affects workforce
Many employees juggle their jobs with caregiving duties for family members, and HR consultant Linda Roundtree says companies may not understand the effects of caregiving on their workforce because workers are afraid to tell them. After Wisconsin-based Promega surveyed employees about their caregiving responsibilities, it added a benefit allowing an additional two weeks of paid time off per year to care for a sick parent, spouse or child, or to be with a new child.

A survey by New America shows Republicans and Democrats value higher education, but they are split over who should pay for it, with most Democrats saying government support is necessary and Republicans advocating for individual funding. Public funding of higher education also is favored by 80% of Generation Z, while government funding was less favored by older generations, the data shows.
