Provide residents with a forum to express themselves

All sponsoring institutions must guarantee their residents and fellows the opportunity or platform to “communicate and exchange” information among themselves about their learning and working environment. One way to accomplish this is through a house officers’ association/organization.

New for RPA subscribers-only: Planning for your Clinical Learning Environment Review visit

To date, Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) visits are scheduled to occur every 18 to 24 months, but that may not be the case for your institution. The 10 days of advance notice may make it difficult to meet the requirement that the CEO and DIO attend the first and last meetings. You are able to reschedule the visit up to four times, so you may have more time between visits depending on when they occur. Ten days’ notice is not a lot of time, but not much document gathering or scheduling needs to be done. Much of the work can be completed in advance when you are planning for your CLER visit. Resident Well-Being: A Guide for Residency Programs

For many new physicians, residency can cause fatigue and stress, which can affect their ability to take care of themselves and their patients. Recently, the ACGME added a Well-Being section to its Common Program Requirements. This topic, although not a new one, has not been addressed because of the stigma attached to it.

Resident Well-Being is a tool for residency program directors, coordinators, and faculty to teach residents to pay more attention to their self-care and understand how their wellness influences the care they give their patients. This resource will specifically address how to help residents with burnout, depression, stress, and work-life balance. Training tools are included, as well as case studies and examples from various programs about the tools they have implemented for resident wellness.

This book will help you:

  • Assess your program for resident wellness
  • Identify signs of burnout and depression in residents
  • Create a safe working and social environment for residents to excel
