Young People with Type 2 Diabetes, 2019-20

The National Diabetes Audit (NDA) and the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) provide a comprehensive view of diabetes care in England and Wales (NHS Digital)

National Diabetes Audit, 2019-20 , Type 1 Diabetes

This is the first NDA report dedicated to people with type 1 diabetes (NHS Digital)

Effects of Empagliflozin on Erythropoiesis in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes – data from a randomized, placebo controlled study

Empagliflozin increased hemoglobin concentrations and hematocrit with a delayed time kinetic which was most likely attributable to increased erythropoiesis with augmented iron utilization and not hemoconcentration. This might be attributable to reduced tubular glucose reabsorption in response to SGLT2 inhibition possibly resulting in diminished cellular stress as a mechanism for increased renal erythropoietin secretion (Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism)

Reappearance of C-Peptide During the Third Trimester of Pregnancy in Type 1 Diabetes: Pancreatic Regeneration or Fetal Hyperinsulinism?

First maternal C-peptide appearance at 34 weeks was associated with midtrimester hyperglycemia, elevated cord blood C-peptide, and high rates of neonatal complications. This suggests transfer of C-peptide from fetal to maternal serum and is inconsistent with pregnancy-related β-cell regeneration (Diabetes Care)

Proteomic mechanistic profile of patients with diabetes at risk of developing heart failure: insights from the HOMAGE trial

Amongst patients at risk for HF, those with diabetes have higher plasma concentrations of proteins involved in inflammation and proteolysis (Cardiovascular Diabetology)

High-risk coronary artery plaque in asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes: clinical risk factors and coronary artery calcium score

A high prevalence of HRP was detected in this population of asymptomatic T2D. The presence of HRP was associated with a particular patient profile, but was not ruled out by the absence of coronary artery calcium (Cardiovascular Diabetology)

Metformin for pediatric obesity and insulin resistance: a retrospective study within an integrated health care system

Metformin with lifestyle interventions significantly reduced weight, BMI, and BMI z score in pediatric patients with obesity and insulin resistance up to 24 months, compared with intensive and routine counseling alone (Obesity)

Once-weekly tirzepatide versus once-daily insulin degludec as add-on to metformin with or without SGLT2 inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes (SURPASS-3)

In patients with type 2 diabetes, tirzepatide (5, 10, and 15 mg) was superior to titrated insulin degludec, with greater reductions in HbA1c and bodyweight at week 52 and a lower risk of hypoglycaemia. Tirzepatide showed a similar safety profile to that of GLP-1 receptor agonists (The Lancet)

Glucose-Lowering Therapy in Patients With Postpancreatitis Diabetes Mellitus: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study

PPDM is a common type of secondary diabetes in adults but is often misclassified and treated as type 2 diabetes, although PPDM requires special considerations for management (Diabetes Care)

Comparative Effectiveness of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors vs Sulfonylureas in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

In this comparative effectiveness study analyzing data from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, among patients with type 2 diabetes receiving metformin therapy, SGLT2 inhibitor treatment was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality compared with sulfonylureas (AMA)
