The Front Page: A crime victim fights back, the holiday dilemma and a bill for Jack Strain

By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor

CLEAN AND JERK: Police generally advise against resisting a robber, who might, after all, be armed with a deadly weapon. Masina Tupea was having nothing of it. When a guy slugged her mother in the jaw in New Orleans' Central Business District and tried to snatch the woman's purse, Tupea, an 18-year-old powerlifter from Hawaii, chased down the mugger and pinned him to the ground until police arrived to arrest him.

CHANGE OF PLANS: With COVID-19 infections surging across Louisiana, Gov. John Bel Edwards asked the public to ring in the New Year from home, instead of going to parties or outdoor celebrations crowded with would-be disease carriers.

Throwing caution to the wind? Here are some public celebrations in New Orleans, along with street closures and parking restrictions for the holiday weekend.

Thinking of taking a cruise? Think again.

INVOICE FOR INCARCERATION: Jack Strain already faces life in prison, for sex crimes committed before he became St. Tammany Parish's sheriff. As he awaits sentencing, the district attorney's office is moving to make him pay part of the costs of his incarceration and the prosecution, as well as restitution to his four victims.

Welcome to the last day of 2021. Check the latest news at NOLA.com.
