Under the influence: Would you take this job? Of all the terms to emerge in the digital economy, “influencer” is one of the most confusing. In a nutshell, it refers to internet personalities with a large number of followers who use their platform to give testimonials for sponsors. It sounds like a sweet deal, but would anyone be willing to work for an influencer? A recent job listing posted in the Los Angeles area detailed an influencer’s requirements for an assistant, which were routinely mocked on social media. According to the listing, applicants need to “work eight hour days on the property...be on call 24/7, be able to 'remove emotion', be 'the bad guy' and handle 'hundreds of small tasks at once.” It also says that applicants should be prepared to wake the influencer up each day, cook, clean, make coffee and be ready to travel “anywhere at any time.” As one commenter put it, “I’d rather die than do any of this for even one day.” But hey, the pay is $25 an hour. Influencers can be a force for good, but not all the time. Tap or click here to see how Instagram influencers almost destroyed this poppy field. → |
