We were supposed to bring a dessert to a picnic in the park and we were running out of time. So we made simple blueberry lemon shortcakes with a cake mix, frozen blueberries, and lemon syrup.
Oh, and we added lemon whipped cream (substitute lemon flavor for the vanilla and add a little zest).
We could have used other fresh or frozen fruit but the blueberries stain the syrup such a pretty color.
You've topped cake with fruit before. Add a sauce or syrup for a very nice touch. Lemon is a favorite but so is caramel. Marshmallow is marvelous and it's not sticky sweet.
